Chapter 4 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE SILVER ROSE

Amelia spent the next ten minutes staring at the bracelet.
A tiny silver rose.
A delicate chain.
A gift she'd worn for thirteen years.
How could something so small contain a secret powerful enough to terrify Troy Mercer?
She called Gabriel.
He answered immediately.
“Amelia?”
“I think we need to talk.”
Twenty minutes later, he arrived with Vincent and a woman named Detective Laura Bennett.
Amelia appreciated that he had brought an actual police detective.
For years, Troy had convinced her that calling the authorities would only make things worse.
Gabriel seemed determined to prove that she could seek help without surrendering control.
Amelia explained Rebecca's call.
Then she removed the bracelet.
Her fingers trembled as she placed it on the table.
Gabriel stared at it.
“My sister wore this every day.”
Detective Bennett examined the clasp.
“May I?”
Amelia nodded.
The detective carefully turned the rose pendant.
A nearly invisible seam circled its base.
“There may be a compartment.”
Gabriel's expression changed.
A forensic technician later opened the pendant without damaging it.
Inside was a tiny folded strip of paper.
The handwriting was faded.
But the words were clear.
Warehouse 19.
Lake Street.
Ask for Michael.
And beneath them:
Eleanor knows.
Amelia covered her mouth.
“My mother knew what happened?”
Gabriel stared at the paper.
“Possibly.”
Detective Bennett photographed it.
Then asked Amelia about Eleanor's life.
“She worked at a women's shelter,” Amelia said. “Before she became ill.”
Gabriel looked up sharply.
“Sofia volunteered at a shelter.”
Amelia's heart raced.
“Where?”
“Near Lake Street.”
The room fell silent.
Then Gabriel opened an old photograph on his phone.
It showed Sofia standing outside a brick building with several volunteers.
One woman stood beside her.
Dark hair.
Gentle smile.
A familiar face.
Amelia gasped.
“Mom.”
Gabriel nodded slowly.
“They knew each other.”
Amelia began crying.
Her mother had never mentioned Sofia.
Or Gabriel.
Or Warehouse 19.
But she'd given Amelia the bracelet and insisted she never take it off.
“I thought it was just sentimental,” Amelia whispered.
Gabriel's expression softened.
“Maybe it was also meant to keep something safe.”
Detective Bennett contacted investigators.
Warehouse 19 had been demolished years earlier.
But archived property records identified its former owner.
Mercer Development Group.
Troy's father's company.
Amelia felt sick.
Then Vincent entered with another report.
“Boss, there's something else.”
Gabriel looked up.
“What?”
“The warehouse demolition was authorized seventeen years ago.”
“And?”
Vincent hesitated.
“The order was signed the morning after Sofia disappeared.”
Amelia stared at him.
Then Detective Bennett opened the associated property file.
A photograph appeared.
Sofia stood beside a man outside the warehouse.
He was holding her arm.
May you like
And Amelia recognized him immediately.
Richard Mercer. Troy's father.
