Chapter 12 - THE CHILDREN WHO WERE NEVER PAWNS

Amelia couldn't speak.

Her children.

Nolan.

Caleb.

Lily.

Richard Mercer had apparently viewed them as tools in a financial scheme.

Not grandchildren.

Not little people with favorite books and bedtime routines.

Tools.

She felt anger rise so sharply that her hands began shaking.

For years, Troy had made her feel selfish for wanting independence.

He'd accused her of destroying the family whenever she questioned him.

Now she understood that the entire relationship might have been part of something far more calculated.

Gabriel sat beside her.

“Amelia?”

She looked at him.

“I married him because I thought he loved me.”

Gabriel didn't rush to reassure her.

He simply listened.

“I built a life around that belief.”

Her voice broke.

“And now I don't know what was real.”

Gabriel nodded slowly.

“Your children are real.”

She looked up.

He continued.

“Your love for them is real. The way you've protected them is real.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“And nothing Troy or Richard planned changes that.”

Amelia began crying.

For the first time, the words reached something deep inside her.

She wasn't defined by the man who manipulated her.

She wasn't foolish because she'd trusted someone.

She was a mother who had survived.

And now she was choosing a different future.

Over the following weeks, court proceedings addressed parenting arrangements and protective measures.

Amelia worked with her attorney to prioritize the children's well-being.

Troy's access was restricted according to the court's orders while the allegations were investigated.

Richard faced serious criminal charges connected to financial fraud and the concealment of evidence.

The Moretti-Carter trust came under independent review.

And Sofia continued recovering with her family.

One afternoon, Amelia brought the children to Rosa Moretti's garden.

Rosa had insisted.

She wanted to meet the grandchildren of the woman who saved her daughter.

Lily immediately fell in love with the roses.

Caleb asked a thousand questions about the fountain.

Nolan sat beside Gabriel, listening as the older man explained how to play chess.

Amelia watched them.

For the first time in years, her children looked completely relaxed.

Rosa approached.

“Your mother was a remarkable woman.”

Amelia smiled through her tears.

“She was.”

Rosa took her hand.

“She would be proud of you.”

Amelia swallowed.

“I hope so.”

Rosa nodded.

“I know so.”

Then Sofia stepped into the garden.

She carried a small wooden box.

“Amelia?”

Amelia turned.

“Yes?”

“There's something your mother left with me.”

Her heart tightened.

Sofia opened the box.

Inside was a photograph of Eleanor holding baby Amelia.

And beneath it lay a letter.

The envelope was marked:

For Amelia, when she finally finds the courage to leave.

Amelia covered her mouth.

May you like

Then Sofia whispered:

“Your mother knew Troy would hurt you. And she prepared a way out long before you realized you needed one.”
