Chapter 10 - THE FORTUNE HIDDEN BEHIND THE ROSE

The silver bracelet had belonged to Sofia Moretti.

But the engraved rose represented something much larger.

A charitable trust established decades earlier by the Moretti and Carter families.

The trust held property, investments, and funds intended to support shelters for women and children escaping violence.

Richard Mercer had been hired to manage several of its properties.

Instead, investigators discovered evidence suggesting he'd diverted assets into companies he controlled.

The estimated value exceeded two hundred million dollars.

Amelia stared at the documents.

“My mother was involved?”

Gabriel nodded.

“Eleanor helped establish one of the shelters.”

Amelia felt tears gathering.

Her mother had spent her life helping people.

She wore secondhand clothes.

Saved grocery coupons.

And gave money to struggling families whenever she could.

Now Amelia was discovering she'd been fighting a financial conspiracy worth hundreds of millions.

“Why didn't she tell me?”

Gabriel looked at her gently.

“Maybe she wanted you to have a normal life.”

Amelia laughed bitterly.

“Then she picked the wrong man for me to marry.”

Gabriel didn't smile.

He understood how much pain lay beneath the joke.

Detective Bennett continued examining the trust records.

One beneficiary was listed as Eleanor Carter's daughter.

Amelia.

Her name appeared alongside a provision granting her an interest in the trust's charitable governance.

She stared.

“So I inherited money?”

The attorney shook his head.

“Not necessarily directly. These documents need legal review. But you may have enforceable rights connected to the trust.”

Amelia nodded.

Money wasn't what she wanted.

She wanted an apartment.

A safe school for the children.

A life where Lily didn't flinch when someone raised their voice.

Then Gabriel's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“What?”

A pause.

Then:

“When?”

He looked toward Amelia.

Her heart tightened.

“What happened?”

Gabriel lowered the phone.

“Richard Mercer has been located.”

“Where?”

“At a private airfield outside Chicago.”

“Was he arrested?”

“Investigators detained him for questioning.”

Amelia exhaled.

But Gabriel wasn't finished.

“There's something else.”

She swallowed.

“What?”

“They recovered several documents from his luggage.”

The attorney opened the files.

Financial records.

Old trust agreements.

And a sealed envelope addressed to Amelia Carter.

Her hands began trembling.

She opened it.

Inside was a letter from Eleanor.

My beautiful Amelia,

If you've found this, then the truth has finally reached you.

Tears filled her eyes.

I hoped to spare you the burden of what Richard Mercer did.

She swallowed.

But I also wanted you to know that you were never as powerless as Troy made you believe.

Amelia began crying.

Then she read the final paragraph.

Your children deserve safety. You deserve freedom.

May you like

And beneath that was one last sentence.

“If Troy ever tells you that he owns your home, remember that the building was purchased with money stolen from your inheritance.”
