Chapter 11 - THE APARTMENT HE USED TO CONTROL ME

Troy had spent years telling Amelia the apartment belonged to him.

Whenever they argued, he reminded her that he paid the rent.

Whenever she asked for more independence, he said she should be grateful.

And when she finally decided to leave, he threatened to make her homeless.

Now investigators had uncovered records suggesting the building was purchased through a company funded by misappropriated trust assets.

Amelia stared at the documents.

“He knew.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“We don't know exactly what he knew yet.”

She nodded.

But memories returned.

Troy refusing to let her see the lease.

Troy insisting all bills go through his accounts.

Troy telling her she couldn't survive without his money.

She'd believed him.

For years.

Now she was beginning to see how carefully he'd constructed that belief.

The investigation continued.

Attorneys reviewed the trust records.

Financial regulators examined Richard's companies.

And Amelia worked with a domestic violence advocate to establish a safe, independent housing plan.

For the first time, she was making decisions without asking Troy's permission.

A few days later, she took the children to a small apartment overlooking a park.

It wasn't luxurious.

Two bedrooms.

A bright kitchen.

A balcony with a view of the playground.

But it had locks she controlled.

A lease in her own name.

And enough room for three children to laugh without worrying about making someone angry.

Lily ran toward the window.

“Mommy! Swings!”

Caleb discovered a shelf perfect for his dinosaur collection.

Nolan stood in the doorway.

“Is this really ours?”

Amelia nodded.

“Yes.”

He looked at her carefully.

“Can Dad come here?”

Her heart tightened.

“Not unless it's arranged safely and legally.”

Nolan exhaled.

Then he smiled.

A real smile.

One she hadn't seen in months.

“Good.”

Amelia began crying.

She crouched and held him.

“You don't have to protect everyone anymore.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

But the investigation wasn't finished.

That evening, Detective Bennett called.

“Troy has agreed to provide information about his father's operations.”

Amelia sat down.

“Why?”

“He's hoping cooperation will affect the legal consequences he faces.”

She closed her eyes.

“Of course.”

Then the detective continued.

“He also admitted that he knew about the bracelet.”

Amelia's stomach tightened.

“For how long?”

“Since before your marriage.”

She felt sick.

Troy had known.

He'd approached her.

Married her.

Controlled her money.

And spent years searching for the evidence her mother left behind.

Her entire marriage had been built around a secret.

Then Detective Bennett added:

“There's one more thing.”

Amelia swallowed.

“What?”

“Troy says his father instructed him to have children with you.”

Her blood ran cold.

“Why?”

The detective hesitated.

May you like

Then answered:

“Because Richard believed controlling your children would eventually give him control of the trust.”
