Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO SAVED THE REPORT

My brake failure had never been an accident.

That realization changed the case.

Police reopened the incident.

The mechanic was questioned.

The vehicle records were recovered.

And someone finally admitted the truth.

A former Carter Development security contractor had been paid $20,000 three days before my crash.

By Hayes Strategic Advisory.

My fake company.

My fake signature.

My intended death.

Richard had created the perfect circle.

Kill me.

Collect five million dollars.

Blame financial crimes on me.

Save Daniel's company.

I sat in Caroline's office reading the report.

"Why am I not screaming?"

"Shock."

"No. I think I'm out of shock."

"What are you in?"

"Planning."

Caroline almost smiled.

"That's useful."

Daniel entered with his attorney.

For the first time in our marriage, he looked older than me.

Not because he was.

Because cowardice ages badly.

He placed a key on the table.

"Safe deposit box."

Caroline looked at his attorney.

"Your client is cooperating?"

"We're negotiating."

I picked up the key.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

"You don't negotiate through me."

"I need your statement."

"For what?"

"To confirm my father controlled the company."

I laughed.

"You want the woman you cheated on, defrauded, and tried to evict to help you get immunity."

"I know how it sounds."

"It sounds exactly like what it is."

He looked down.

"I deserve that."

"Yes."

Something inside me finally felt free.

Not because I had forgiven him.

Because I no longer needed him to understand what he had done.

Caroline arranged for federal investigators to open the box.

Inside were copies of everything Daniel promised.

Inspection failures.

Payment instructions.

Emails from Richard.

One message stood out.

FROM: RICHARD CARTER

TO: DANIEL CARTER

EMILY IS USEFUL ONLY AS LONG AS SHE REMAINS UNAWARE. ONCE THE DEBT IS CLEARED, MOVE FORWARD WITH SOPHIA AND COMPLETE THE EXIT PLAN.

I read it twice.

Daniel had known before the dinner.

Before the champagne.

Before telling me Sophia would move in.

The humiliation had been scheduled.

Then another email appeared.

FROM: DANIEL CARTER

TO: RICHARD CARTER

I'M NOT LETTING YOU HURT HER.

I stared.

Date: eight months earlier.

Richard replied:

THEN REMEMBER WHO OWNS YOUR COMPANY.

Another email.

Daniel:

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO EMILY, I GO TO THE POLICE.

I looked across the table at him.

"You knew he wanted me dead."

"Eventually."

"And you stayed silent."

"Because he threatened Noah."

Sophia's son.

Daniel's son.

The room became quiet.

"He said if I talked, he'd take Noah."

"How?"

"My father controls Sophia's trust. Her apartment. Her finances. Everything."

Caroline leaned back.

"So Richard used everybody."

Daniel nodded.

I hated that understanding him now made the situation more complicated.

But understanding was not forgiveness.

Then the investigator opened one final envelope.

A photograph slid onto the table.

My parents.

Standing beside Richard Carter.

Twenty-five years ago.

I stared.

"I don't understand."

On the back was handwritten:

HAYES-CARTER DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP, 2001.

My father had known Richard.

No.

More than known him.

May you like

They had been business partners.

And suddenly my inheritance didn't feel accidental.
