Chapter 10 - MY FATHER'S DEATH CERTIFICATE

The death certificate said myocardial infarction.

The hospital records said something different.

My father had arrived complaining of chest pain.

He deteriorated rapidly.

But one lab value stood out.

A toxicology marker.

Abnormal.

Ignored.

Caroline hired a medical consultant.

He reviewed the file twice.

Then called us.

"This should have triggered further testing."

"For what?" I asked.

"Certain cardiac toxins."

My mouth went dry.

"Poison?"

"Potentially."

The hospital had discarded biological samples years ago.

No direct proof remained.

But another piece surfaced.

My father's attending physician had received $120,000 through a Carter-related consulting firm eight months after his death.

My anger became something colder.

Richard Carter had not merely stolen from my family.

He may have murdered my father.

I went to my mother's grave that afternoon.

For years I had believed my parents left me an apartment.

A modest inheritance.

A quiet memory.

Now I understood they had left me evidence.

Maybe they had known I would eventually need it.

I sat beside the stone.

"I wish you'd told me."

Wind moved through the trees.

No answer.

Of course.

Then I noticed something strange.

Fresh flowers.

Not mine.

A white card.

No name.

Only:

YOUR MOTHER TRIED TO TELL YOU.

My heart stopped.

I looked around.

Nobody nearby.

I called Caroline.

She arrived twenty minutes later.

We searched old records again.

My mother's death had come nine years after my father's.

Cancer.

No mystery there.

But during her final year, she hired a private investigator.

His name was Marcus Reed.

Retired police detective.

Still alive.

We found him in Indiana.

Marcus agreed to meet.

He was seventy now.

Gray beard.

Sharp eyes.

When I showed him my mother's photograph, he immediately recognized her.

"Eleanor Hayes."

My throat tightened.

"You worked for her?"

"Two years."

"Investigating Richard Carter?"

He nodded.

"She believed he was responsible for your husband's company taking your father's assets."

"Did she think he killed my father?"

Marcus looked at me carefully.

"Yes."

"Did she prove it?"

"Not completely."

He opened an old metal case.

Inside were photographs.

Richard meeting city officials.

Inspectors.

Accountants.

Then one photograph froze me.

Margaret Carter.

Daniel's mother.

Meeting my mother outside a restaurant.

"What is this?"

"Margaret contacted Eleanor secretly."

I stared.

"Why?"

"She wanted out."

"Out of what?"

"The marriage."

I laughed in disbelief.

"Margaret spent last night helping her son throw me out of my house."

"People change."

Marcus pushed another file toward me.

"Or fear changes them."

Inside was a signed statement from Margaret.

Richard Carter directed fake vendor companies.

Bribed inspectors.

Threatened Thomas Hayes.

Margaret knew about all of it.

But the statement was never delivered.

"Why?"

Marcus looked grim.

"Your mother died before we could file it."

I swallowed.

"Cancer."

"Yes."

Then he placed one more photograph in front of me.

Taken six months after my mother's funeral.

Margaret standing beside Richard outside a courthouse.

On the back, Marcus had written:

MARGARET WITHDREW COOPERATION AFTER THREAT AGAINST DANIEL.

Daniel again.

Richard controlled everyone through fear.

Then my phone rang.

Margaret Carter.

I answered.

Her voice was shaking.

"Emily."

I stood.

"What do you want?"

"I need to see you."

"Why?"

She started crying.

"Because Richard knows the federal agents are closing in."

May you like

A pause.

"And because he's going to kill Daniel tonight."
