Chapter 4 - THE COMPANY WITH MY NAME

Hayes Strategic Advisory had existed for four years.

I had been married for five.

The timing wasn't accidental.

Neither was the address.

The registered office belonged to Carter Development Group.

My husband's company.

I sat in Caroline's conference room while she pulled public filings.

Contracts.

Tax registrations.

State licenses.

Government vendor records.

All carrying my name.

"This makes no sense."

Caroline pointed at the screen.

"The company provides consulting services."

"That's what I do."

"Exactly."

"But these aren't my clients."

"No."

She opened a contract worth $640,000.

"Do you recognize Greenway Municipal Partners?"

"No."

Another.

$385,000.

Another.

$910,000.

My stomach turned.

Millions of dollars had moved through a company that supposedly belonged to me.

"Where did the money go?"

"We're tracing it."

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I rejected the call.

He called again.

And again.

On the fourth attempt, I answered.

"What?"

"Do not talk to anyone about Hayes Strategic."

The fear in his voice told me more than any confession.

"Why?"

"Emily, listen carefully. That company has nothing to do with you."

"It literally has my name on it."

"It's complicated."

"Then simplify it."

He exhaled.

"My father created it."

I looked at Caroline.

She immediately began typing.

"For what?"

"Tax purposes."

"That's not an answer."

"Certain consulting contracts needed a woman-owned vendor."

Silence.

I understood.

They had used my identity to qualify for contracts.

"Are you telling me your family created a fake woman-owned company in my name?"

"No. It wasn't fake."

"Did I own it?"

"Technically."

"Did I operate it?"

"No."

"Did I receive the money?"

Silence.

"Daniel."

"No."

I closed my eyes.

Years of exhaustion.

Years of believing we were barely surviving.

Meanwhile millions had flowed through a company carrying my identity.

"Where did the money go?"

"Business expenses."

"Whose business?"

He didn't answer.

Then his voice softened.

"Come home."

I almost laughed.

"I am home."

"You know what I mean."

"No, Daniel. I don't."

"We can fix this."

"There is no we."

"Emily, if you involve federal authorities, this gets ugly."

I looked at Caroline.

She mouthed one word.

Record.

I put the call on speaker.

"Ugly for whom?"

Daniel paused.

"For everyone."

"Is that a threat?"

"No."

"Then explain the company."

"I can't."

"Why?"

Another pause.

"Because my father will destroy us both."

The call ended.

Caroline immediately saved the recording.

I stared at the phone.

"Richard is running this."

"Looks that way."

She continued searching.

Then she stopped.

"Emily."

"What?"

"I found the bank account."

My pulse jumped.

"How much?"

"Current balance?"

She turned the laptop.

$1,742,806.18.

My mouth fell open.

"That's mine?"

"Legally, the account belongs to the LLC."

"Which legally belongs to me."

"Correct."

I stared at the number.

For three years, I had sacrificed everything to pay Daniel's debt.

Meanwhile his family had nearly two million dollars sitting in a company they stole using my name.

Then Caroline clicked the account history.

One transfer occurred six months earlier.

$500,000.

Recipient:

Bennett Family Trust.

I frowned.

"Who is Bennett?"

Caroline searched.

Her expression changed.

"Sophia Bennett."

I went cold.

Daniel's mistress.

But beneath the transfer was a memo line.

Not penthouse.

Not consulting.

Not gift.

It said:

PAYMENT PER AGREEMENT - CHILD SUPPORT ADVANCE.

I stared.

"Child support?"

May you like

Caroline looked at me.

"Emily... I think Sophia has a child."
