Chapter 5 - The Night Richard Caldwell Died

The man who managed Grace's restaurant had been present on the night Jonathan Caldwell lost his father.

And somehow, Victoria had kept that connection hidden for years.

Grace stared at the medical authorization.

"Martin told us he worked in restaurants his entire life."

Charles Whitmore shook his head.

"Before joining Belmont Crown, he managed private hospitality services for the Caldwell estate."

Lucas leaned closer.

"So he knew Victoria?"

"Very well."

Grace remembered the moment Victoria tore her uniform.

Martin had stood nearby.

He hadn't intervened.

And when Jonathan arrived, he'd looked more frightened than embarrassed.

"What happened to Richard Caldwell?" Grace asked.

Whitmore folded his hands.

"He had a serious heart condition. His death was originally attributed to complications from that illness."

"Originally?"

"Questions were raised after Eleanor reviewed discrepancies in his treatment records."

Grace felt sick.

"Did my mother report them?"

"She tried."

Whitmore opened another folder.

"Shortly afterward, she was accused of stealing confidential documents and dismissed."

Lucas looked furious.

"Someone framed her."

"That is what Eleanor maintained."

Grace wiped her face.

"Did Jonathan know?"

Whitmore hesitated.

"I don't believe he knew the full circumstances."

"Why not?"

"Because his marriage was already strained by disagreements over the foundation, and Victoria controlled much of the information reaching him."

Grace stared at the documents.

She had walked into a restaurant trying to pay her brother's tuition.

Now she was sitting in an attorney's office learning that her mother's final employer might have died under suspicious circumstances.

"What does the key open?" she asked.

Whitmore looked toward the door.

Then lowered his voice.

"A secure compartment containing the original foundation records and a statement Richard prepared shortly before he died."

Grace swallowed.

"Can we see it?"

"As the designated custodians named in Eleanor's instructions, you can request access through the trust's legal process."

Lucas frowned.

"Why didn't anyone contact us before?"

Whitmore's expression tightened.

"Because the trust's records indicated Eleanor's designated heirs couldn't be located."

Grace stared.

"That's impossible. We've lived in Chicago our entire lives."

"Someone submitted an address change."

"What address?"

Whitmore turned the page.

Grace's stomach dropped.

The address was a vacant property owned by a Caldwell-affiliated company.

Lucas whispered, "Someone deliberately kept the notices from us."

Whitmore nodded grimly.

"I've referred the discrepancy for investigation."

Grace leaned back.

Her hands were shaking again.

Then her phone rang.

Jonathan Caldwell.

She stared at the screen.

Rebecca, who had accompanied them, nodded.

"You can answer if you're comfortable."

Grace accepted the call.

"Hello?"

Jonathan's voice sounded tense.

"Grace, are you somewhere safe?"

"Yes."

"Good. I need to ask you something."

She swallowed.

"What?"

"Did your mother ever mention a private trust?"

Grace exchanged a glance with Lucas.

"Why?"

Jonathan took a breath.

"My attorney found evidence that my father created a fund before he died."

Grace felt cold.

"What kind of fund?"

"A charitable endowment for families facing medical debt."

She looked toward Whitmore.

Then Jonathan added something unexpected.

"He named Eleanor Bennett as an independent trustee."

Grace stopped breathing.

"And apparently," Jonathan continued, "he appointed her children as successor representatives if anything happened to her."

Lucas stared.

Grace whispered, "Why would he do that?"

Jonathan's voice became quiet.

"Because he trusted your mother more than anyone in my family."

Then he hesitated.

"Grace, there's something else."

"What?"

"Victoria has been secretly transferring money out of that foundation for years."

Grace gripped the phone.

"How much?"

May you like

Jonathan's next words made her feel faint.

"Almost twenty-eight million dollars."
