Chapter 12 - The Woman with Two Husbands

Victoria Caldwell had built her life on an identity that wasn't entirely her own.

And the name Vivian Sterling was the first crack in the carefully polished image she'd presented to the world.

Detective Mitchell immediately began reviewing the new information.

Records showed that Vivian Sterling had been married to Arthur Sterling, a wealthy investor whose charitable foundation had suffered substantial financial losses before his death.

Afterward, Vivian changed her name.

Years later, she became Victoria Hart.

Then Victoria Caldwell.

Grace sat beside Jonathan as the detective explained the timeline.

"Was Arthur Sterling murdered?" Grace asked.

Mitchell answered carefully.

"His death was recorded as natural. We're reviewing the circumstances, but we aren't assuming a crime without evidence."

Grace nodded.

She wanted justice.

Not another story built on suspicion.

Jonathan stared at the photograph.

"She told me she grew up in Connecticut. That her parents died when she was young."

"Some parts of that history may be accurate," Mitchell said. "Other parts appear to have been concealed or misrepresented."

Jonathan closed his eyes.

"Five years."

Grace looked toward him.

"What?"

"I was married to her for five years."

His voice broke.

"And I barely knew who she was."

Grace wanted to comfort him.

But she knew he needed more than comfort.

He needed to face what had happened.

Over the following weeks, investigators gathered additional evidence.

Arthur Sterling's former accountant provided records of suspicious transactions.

A former foundation employee described pressure to approve questionable expenses.

And Martin Doyle's company appeared in both the Sterling and Caldwell financial investigations.

The pattern was difficult to ignore.

Then a forensic review of Richard Caldwell's medical records produced a major breakthrough.

Experts found evidence of unauthorized changes to treatment instructions.

Dr. Alexander Pierce had access to the relevant systems.

Investigators also recovered messages suggesting he received improper payments in connection with the altered records.

The medical review concluded that the changes likely contributed to Richard's death.

Grace felt numb when Detective Mitchell explained.

"And my mother?"

The detective took a breath.

"A separate review found similar evidence in Eleanor's records."

Grace gripped Lucas's hand.

Mitchell continued.

"Experts believe unauthorized changes to her treatment may have significantly worsened her condition."

Lucas began crying.

Grace couldn't speak.

For eleven months, she'd believed her mother's death was simply cruel fate.

Now she was learning that someone may have deliberately interfered with her care.

Jonathan lowered his head.

"I'm so sorry."

Grace looked at him.

His grief was genuine.

But she knew no apology could bring Eleanor back.

The investigation eventually produced criminal charges related to the fraudulent medical records and associated financial scheme.

Dr. Pierce was arrested.

Additional charges against Victoria and Martin were pursued as evidence developed.

Grace testified about the restaurant incident and the documents her mother had left behind.

It was exhausting.

Painful.

But she refused to remain silent.

One evening, after leaving the courthouse, she found Jonathan waiting near the steps.

He approached carefully.

"How are you?"

Grace managed a tired smile.

"Ready to sleep for a week."

He smiled faintly.

"I understand."

Then he handed her a small package.

She frowned.

"What is it?"

"Something my father wanted Eleanor to have."

Grace opened it.

Inside was a silver bracelet with a small heart-shaped charm.

She stared.

"My mother had one like this."

Jonathan nodded.

"She lost hers years ago. My father bought this replacement but never got the chance to give it to her."

Grace's eyes filled.

"He remembered?"

"Yes."

She slipped the bracelet onto her wrist.

Then whispered, "Thank you."

Jonathan smiled.

But before they could leave, Detective Mitchell hurried toward them.

"Grace, Jonathan, there's one more development."

Both turned.

"What happened?" Jonathan asked.

Mitchell looked serious.

"Investigators recovered a private recording from Victoria's former apartment."

Grace felt cold.

"And?"

"It concerns Eleanor Bennett."

Grace gripped the bracelet.

Then Mitchell said something neither of them expected.

"On the recording, Eleanor tells Victoria she has already made sure her children will be protected."

A pause.

"And Victoria answers that she knows exactly who Grace Bennett really is."

Grace stared.

"What does that mean?"

May you like

Mitchell looked directly at her.

"That's what we need to find out."
