Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Forged Her Own Past

Someone had rewritten my mother's history.

And Victoria Caldwell was standing three feet away, pretending not to know why.

Grace felt the room spin.

"That document is wrong," she whispered.

Jonathan looked toward Victoria.

"Explain your signature."

Victoria folded her arms.

"My signature appears on hundreds of documents."

"This one is dated before you became involved with my family."

"So?"

"You told me you didn't know my father until our engagement."

Victoria's jaw tightened.

"Perhaps I forgot meeting him."

Jonathan stared.

"You forgot overseeing the dismissal of his private nurse?"

For once, Victoria had no answer.

Grace pulled the navy jacket tighter around her shoulders.

She wanted to leave.

But the photograph in her hand had changed everything.

Her mother had spent her final months worried about something.

Something connected to Jonathan's family.

Something she'd never told Grace.

"Mr. Caldwell," Grace said quietly, "I need to go home."

Jonathan turned.

"Of course."

Victoria immediately protested.

"You can't simply let her leave with evidence!"

Grace looked at her.

"I'm not taking anything that belongs to you."

Victoria pointed at the photograph.

"That belongs to Jonathan."

Grace held it out.

Jonathan shook his head.

"Keep it for now. It's a copy, and your mother is in it."

Victoria looked furious.

Grace's eyes filled.

"Thank you."

Jonathan called for a car service, but Grace declined.

She didn't want anyone from the Caldwell household knowing where she lived.

He respected her decision.

Before leaving, Grace asked Martin for a copy of the incident report documenting her torn uniform.

The manager looked uncomfortable.

"We can handle this privately."

"No," Grace answered.

Her voice trembled, but she didn't lower it.

"I want the incident documented."

Jonathan nodded.

"As you should."

A security employee confirmed the restaurant's cameras had recorded the confrontation.

Grace asked that the footage be preserved.

Then she walked outside into the rain.

For the first time all evening, she could breathe.

Twenty minutes later, she reached the cramped apartment she shared with her twenty-year-old brother, Lucas.

He was sitting at the kitchen table, studying for an accounting exam.

The moment he saw her torn uniform, he stood.

"Grace?"

"I'm okay."

His eyes widened.

"Who did that?"

She sank into a chair.

"Someone very rich."

Lucas looked furious.

"That doesn't give her the right."

"I know."

Grace pulled the old wooden box from beneath her bed.

It had belonged to their mother.

Dark walnut.

Brass corners.

A tiny lock.

Lucas stared.

"Why are you opening that?"

"Because Mom wanted us to keep it safe."

"She said never to give it to strangers."

Grace nodded.

"I remember."

Inside were folded letters, old medical records, a small brass key, and an envelope sealed with blue wax.

Written across the envelope were four words.

For Grace and Lucas.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

The letter began:

My beautiful children,

If you're reading this, then the people I tried to protect you from may have found you.

Grace stopped breathing.

Lucas moved beside her.

She continued.

I discovered that someone in the Caldwell family was stealing money from a charitable medical foundation.

When I threatened to report it, I was accused of stealing confidential documents.

Tears streamed down Grace's face.

Then she reached the final paragraph.

Jonathan Caldwell is not the enemy.

His wife is dangerous.

But the greatest secret isn't about the money.

Grace's heart pounded.

She turned the page.

One final sentence was written beneath her mother's signature.

Jonathan's father left something behind for my children, and Victoria must never know where it is.

Lucas stared at the letter.

Then whispered.

"Grace, why would a billionaire leave something to us?"

May you like

Grace looked at the brass key.

And suddenly understood that her mother had been protecting far more than family documents.
