Chapter 1 - The Secret Beneath the Torn Dress

Grace Bennett had survived humiliation before, but nothing had prepared her for the discovery waiting inside Jonathan Caldwell's jacket.
She stood in the employee restroom, staring at the expensive navy fabric hanging from her shoulders.
Outside, voices echoed through the hallway.
Victoria Caldwell was shouting.
"I will not be treated like some criminal because of a waitress!"
Grace closed her eyes.
She didn't want to hear another word.
She wanted to go home, take a hot shower, and pretend the evening had never happened.
Then something slipped from the jacket's inside pocket.
A photograph.
It fluttered onto the tiled floor.
Grace bent to retrieve it.
And froze.
The photograph showed a smiling woman standing outside a small white house.
The woman had dark brown hair, gentle eyes, and a familiar silver necklace.
Grace's breath caught.
"Mom?"
Her mother, Eleanor Bennett, had died eleven months earlier.
But there she was, smiling in a photograph Grace had never seen.
Standing beside her was a much younger Jonathan Caldwell.
Grace stared at the picture.
Why did a billionaire have a photograph of her mother?
She turned it over.
A date had been written in black ink.
October 14, 2018.
Beneath it were six words.
Eleanor knew what Victoria had done.
Grace felt the blood drain from her face.
Her mother had spent the final months of her life working as a private home-care nurse.
She rarely discussed her patients.
But shortly before she became seriously ill, she'd begun receiving strange telephone calls.
Once, Grace had overheard her whispering, "I won't let you destroy another family."
At the time, Grace assumed she was arguing with an insurance company.
Now she wasn't so sure.
Someone knocked.
"Grace?"
It was Jonathan.
She hurriedly opened the door.
He stood alone in the hallway, his expression concerned.
"Are you all right?"
Grace held up the photograph.
"Why do you have this?"
Jonathan stopped breathing.
His eyes moved from the photograph to her face.
"Where did you get that?"
"Your jacket."
He reached toward it, then stopped.
"Your last name is Bennett?"
Grace stared.
"You already knew that."
"What's your mother's name?"
Her hands tightened around the photograph.
"Eleanor."
Jonathan stepped backward.
For the first time that night, the billionaire looked frightened.
"That's impossible," he whispered.
Grace felt tears gathering.
"What is?"
He studied her face.
Then the photograph.
"Your mother worked for my family."
Grace swallowed.
"She was a nurse."
Jonathan nodded.
"She cared for my father during his final illness."
The hallway seemed to grow colder.
"My mother never mentioned the Caldwells."
Jonathan looked toward the private dining room.
Then lowered his voice.
"Grace, I need you to tell me something."
"What?"
"Did your mother leave you any documents before she died?"
Grace hesitated.
There had been a box.
A small wooden box Eleanor insisted Grace keep locked until the time was right.
Inside were medical notes, an old key, and a sealed envelope.
Grace had never opened the envelope.
"Why are you asking?"
Jonathan's expression hardened.
"Because my wife has been searching for something your mother took from our house."
Grace's heart began pounding.
"What did she take?"
Before Jonathan could answer, Victoria appeared at the end of the hallway.
She saw the photograph.
Her face turned white.

Then she whispered something that made Grace's stomach drop.
"Jonathan, don't tell me that girl is Eleanor Bennett's daughter."
