Chapter 4 - The Missing Grandfather’s Will

Leaving Edward and Evelyn weeping on their porch, I directed my driver toward the county courthouse in the neighboring historic district. The rain had intensified into a blinding cascade, drumming against the reinforced glass of the limousine.

My chief legal investigator, Marcus Kane, sat across from me in the plush leather cabin, reviewing decrypted probate microfilms from thirty years ago. "Lucas, we finally cracked the sealed probate records from your grandfather Harold Vance’s estate."

I leaned forward, the shadow of a long-buried intuition hardening into absolute certainty. "What did Harold leave behind before his sudden death when I was five years old?"

"Harold didn't just leave a small family manufacturing firm," Marcus said, handing me a certified reproduction of the original 1994 testament. "He created an untouchable blind trust valued at eighty-five million dollars, funded by his early patents in industrial robotics."

I scanned the yellowed legal paragraphs, my eyes locking onto the succession clause highlighted in bold red ink. "The entire estate was bequeathed directly to Harold's only biological grandson who carried the Vance athletic work ethic—Lucas Vance."

"Under one critical legal condition," Marcus continued, pointing at the bottom clause. "If Lucas Vance was legally disowned, declared a runaway, or removed from the family home before his eighteenth birthday, the trust assets would automatically transfer to the surviving extended household—namely, Edward and Julian's father, Arthur."

The cold, sickening truth struck me like a physical blow, connecting every jagged piece of my childhood torment. My parents hadn't favored Julian out of innocent blindness or casual preference; they had executed a calculated, systematic psychological campaign to destroy me.

Every birthday forgotten, every athletic triumph mocked, every dinner denied had been designed to provoke me into running away before I turned eighteen. When I arrived home on my seventeenth birthday with the state trophy, I was only twelve months away from claiming Harold's eighty-five-million-dollar empire.

They smashed my trophy, slapped my face, and threw my duffle bag into the storm so they could file a deserted minor report with the county sheriff the following morning. By declaring me an abandoned runaway, Edward and Julian's family unlocked Harold's massive trust fund and split the fortune among themselves.

"They bought Julian's elite boarding school tuition, his sports cars, and their luxury country club memberships with my grandfather's blood money," I whispered, my voice dropping into a register of deadly calm. "They stole my childhood, threw me into the streets to starve, and told themselves they were superior aristocrats."

Marcus nodded grimly, adjusting his glasses. "Julian used his share of Harold's trust as seed money for his fraudulent offshore hedge fund, which has now collapsed under twelve million dollars of shadow debt."

"They thought they buried me in the rain twelve years ago," I said, closing the leather portfolio with a sharp, echoing snap. "They forgot that seeds grow in the dark, and now the harvest has come for every single one of them."
