Chapter 7 - THE PREGNANCY HAD BEEN PART OF THE PLAN FROM THE BEGINNING

I hated myself for checking the dates.

Then I realized the dates were not the problem.

The lying was.

Lauren had told me:

“I think I’m finally ready.”

I remembered the exact night.

We were eating Thai food.

She looked nervous.

I held her hand.

We talked until midnight.

I asked twice:

“Are you sure?”

She said yes.

Now I knew that before that conversation, she had already spent months tracking ovulation.

Had already discussed the Hale trust with Judith.

Had already explored Paige as a future caregiver.

The decision had existed before I was invited into it.

My attorney obtained messages voluntarily produced through the investigation.

Judith to Lauren:

YOU’RE THIRTY-FIVE NEXT YEAR. STOP OVERTHINKING.

Lauren:

I DON’T WANT TO BE A MOM.

Judith:

YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO IT FOREVER.

I felt physically sick.

Another:

NINETY DAYS. PAIGE TAKES OVER. YOU GET YOUR LIFE BACK AND THE TRUST FINALLY PAYS.

There it was.

The entire blueprint.

Lauren replied:

WHAT ABOUT EVAN?

Judith:

HE WANTS A CHILD. HE’LL GET ONE.

Lauren:

HE’LL NEVER AGREE TO PAIGE RAISING HER.

Judith:

THEN DON’T MAKE IT A QUESTION UNTIL AFTER.

I sat in silence.

Judith had designed pressure.

Lauren had accepted the strategy.

Then one message disturbed me even more.

Lauren:

WHAT IF I CAN’T EVEN DO THE 90 DAYS?

Judith:

YOU CAN DO ANYTHING FOR FOUR MILLION DOLLARS.

That was how my daughter entered their planning.

As a countdown.

Then Lauren responded:

I HATE YOU FOR MAKING THIS SOUND EASY.

Judith:

YOU’LL THANK ME.

For the first time, I saw something more complicated than greed.

Lauren had been telling her mother she did not want this.

Judith kept pushing.

But Lauren still chose deception.

Both truths could exist.

Then Paige called.

She had found their grandmother Eleanor’s original estate-planning letter.

Not the trust.

A personal letter.

In it, Eleanor explained why she created the descendant provision.

I expected something traditional.

Family legacy.

Bloodline.

It wasn’t.

Eleanor wrote:

I do not want grandchildren produced for money. Any beneficiary who becomes a parent should understand that the distribution is intended to support the responsibility they have freely chosen.

My chest tightened.

Then:

If a child becomes merely a condition to unlock funds, the trustees should protect the child before protecting my beneficiary.

Judith had known about this letter.

It had been stored in her files.

May you like

She had shown Lauren the money.

Not the warning.
