Chapter 2 - THE NURSERY HAD BEEN STAGED FOR ME

I did not return home alone.
Police accompanied me the following afternoon after Emma was discharged into my care under an emergency safety plan.
My sister Rachel came too.
She carried Emma.
I carried nothing.
Walking through my own front door felt like entering a stranger’s house.
Lauren was no longer there.
Authorities had arranged for her to undergo an emergency medical and psychological evaluation before any further decisions about contact.
I did not ask them to punish her.
I asked them to keep Emma safe.
There was a difference.
Detective Marcus Bell—not related to Lauren—asked permission to look at the home after obtaining the appropriate documentation.
I agreed.
The bathroom was sealed off.
I never entered it.
Instead, I went straight to the nursery.
White crib.
Cloud mobile.
Pink blanket.
Stuffed rabbit.
Everything we had chosen together.
Or so I thought.
Rachel opened the closet.
Half the shelves were empty.
“Evan?”
“What?”
She pulled out three cardboard boxes.
Each labeled:
PAIGE.
Inside:
Bottles.
Baby clothes.
Diapers.
A second monitor.
Copies of Emma’s medical paperwork.
My stomach turned.
The nursery had not been built solely for our daughter.
It had been functioning as a staging area for her transfer.
Then Detective Bell found a file hidden beneath the changing table.
HART FAMILY TRANSITION.
Inside were calendars.
Day 1.
Day 30.
Day 60.
Day 90.
On day ninety-one:
EMMA TO PAIGE.
LAUREN RETREAT.
EVAN — FINAL CONVERSATION.
I stared at those words.
“What final conversation?”
Nobody answered.
Then Rachel found a printout from a luxury wellness center in Arizona.
Twelve-week residential program.
Private villa.
Fitness.
Nutrition.
Cosmetic-recovery coordination.
Arrival date:
Exactly ninety-two days after Emma’s birth.
Booked under Lauren’s name.
Paid deposit:
$48,000.
I sat down.
My wife had not been improvising.
She had a calendar.
A destination.
A plan.
Then Detective Bell opened another folder.
HALE LEGACY TRUST.
Lauren’s grandmother’s surname.
Inside was a beneficiary schedule.
One line had been highlighted:
QUALIFYING DESCENDANT DISTRIBUTION — $4,200,000.
I looked at the date.
May you like
Emma’s birth had triggered the first stage.
And suddenly ninety days no longer looked like an arbitrary number.
