Chapter 4 - MY MOTHER-IN-LAW CAME TO THE HOSPITAL FOR A SIGNATURE

Judith arrived wearing pearls.
That is what I remember.
I was sitting beside Emma’s hospital bassinet while a social worker explained the temporary safety plan.
Then Judith walked into the family waiting area as if she had come to settle a disagreement over dinner reservations.
“Evan.”
I stood.
“You cannot be here.”
“I’m her grandmother.”
“That doesn’t override hospital rules.”
She lowered her voice.
“Lauren is sick.”
That stopped me.
Not because it excused anything.
Because I wanted to know whether she understood how serious this was.
“What do you mean?”
“She never adjusted to the pregnancy.”
“Then why did you help her borrow against a trust distribution based on having a child?”
Judith’s expression changed.
So she knew I knew.
“It was her inheritance.”
“It depended on Emma.”
“Technically.”
I laughed once.
“Emma is not a technicality.”
Judith looked toward the nursery window.
Then pulled papers from her handbag.
“I came because we need to stabilize things.”
I almost admired the audacity.
“What is that?”
“Temporary guardianship.”
“For who?”
“Paige.”
I stared.
She continued:
“Only until Lauren recovers.”
“You planned this before Emma was born.”
“Lauren was scared.”
“You forged my signature.”
“I did no such thing.”
“Somebody did.”
She hesitated.
Tiny.
Enough.
Then she softened her voice.
“Evan, think clearly. You run a technology firm. You travel. You work sixty hours a week. Paige has always wanted children.”
“What does that have to do with my daughter?”
“Emma would be loved.”
“So you decided to reassign her?”
Judith’s face hardened.
“You’re making this emotional.”
I looked at her.
“She is eleven days old.”
Then:
“This is supposed to be emotional.”
Judith pushed the paperwork toward me.
“Sign it.”
“No.”
“If you refuse, you could lose everything.”
I almost laughed.
“What exactly am I losing?”
She stopped.
Wrong sentence.
I leaned closer.
“What did Lauren promise you?”
Judith said nothing.
Then my phone vibrated.
Paige.
Lauren’s sister.
I had not spoken to her since the birth.
Her message:
EVAN, DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING MOM GIVES YOU.
Then:
I JUST FOUND OUT WHAT THEY TOLD YOU.
A third message appeared.
I NEVER AGREED TO TAKE EMMA PERMANENTLY.
I looked at Judith.
She had told Lauren that Paige would raise our child.
May you like
She had told me Paige wanted her.
And apparently, neither story was true.
