Chapter 1 - THE MESSAGE THAT MENTIONED NINETY DAYS

The nurse did not scroll through my phone casually.

She put on gloves, asked my permission, and photographed every message exactly as it appeared.

My name is Evan Hart.

My wife was Lauren.

And our daughter, Emma, was eleven days old.

At 2:36 a.m., the pediatrician finally returned.

“Mr. Hart?”

I stood so fast the blanket slid from my lap.

“Is she okay?”

“She’s stable.”

My knees almost gave out.

The doctor continued carefully.

They wanted to observe Emma overnight and repeat several checks.

Nothing about the word stable erased what had happened.

But it allowed me to breathe.

Then two police officers arrived.

I told the story again.

No embellishment.

No excuses.

One officer asked:

“Has your wife ever threatened the baby before?”

“No.”

“Has she ever talked about harming herself?”

“Not to me.”

“Any history we should know?”

“I don’t know.”

That answer frightened me more than I expected.

Eleven days earlier, I believed I knew my wife.

Now I was realizing how many conversations I had explained away because I wanted them to mean less.

My phone vibrated again.

The nurse looked at the screen first.

Another message from Lauren.

THIS WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BECOME MY LIFE.

Then another.

YOU PROMISED EVERYTHING WOULD GO BACK TO NORMAL.

I had promised no such thing.

Then:

MOM SAID YOU’D UNDERSTAND AFTER THE NINETY DAYS.

I stared.

“What ninety days?”

The nurse looked at me.

“You don’t know?”

“No.”

Another message arrived.

YOU’RE RUINING THE AGREEMENT.

My pulse changed.

“What agreement?”

Lauren did not answer.

Instead, thirty seconds later, I received an email.

Scheduled delivery.

Subject:

POST-BIRTH PLAN.

Sent from Lauren’s personal account.

Attached:

A scanned legal document.

I opened the first page.

TEMPORARY CAREGIVER TRANSITION AGREEMENT.

Child:

Emma Rose Hart.

Proposed caregiver after ninety days:

Paige Bell.

Lauren’s older sister.

I kept reading.

Then found the signature page.

Lauren had signed.

Her mother, Judith Bell, had signed as witness.

And underneath them was my name.

EVAN HART.

The signature looked almost perfect.

Except I had never signed it.

May you like

My wife had apparently planned to give our daughter to someone else after ninety days.

And somebody had forged my consent before Emma was even born.
