Chapter 9 - The Federal Indictment

At four o'clock that afternoon, Courtroom 502 of the Earle Cabell Federal Building in downtown Dallas was packed to maximum capacity.

Over two hundred journalists, legal scholars, and corporate titans watched in breathless silence as the historic grand jury indictments were unsealed.

Vivienne Vance and Bradley Thorne were led into the courtroom through the secure subterranean prisoner tunnel, wearing bright orange Department of Corrections jumpsuits.

Their wrists and ankles were bound in heavy iron chains that clanked loudly against the polished hardwood floor with every dragging step.

Presiding over the bench was the Honorable Judge Evelyn Cross—the legendary federal jurist known for her uncompromising destruction of corporate corruption.

Prosecutor Claire Montgomery stood before the podium, presenting the sixty-two-count grand jury indictment.

“Your Honor, the defendants did not merely commit corporate fraud and securities manipulation,” Montgomery announced in a voice that rang like steel.

“They executed the capital premeditated assassination of Julian Vance, bribed a county medical examiner, and subjected two minor children to ninety days of aggravated physical torture and starvation.”

“They represent an unprecedented danger to human society and a total absence of moral conscience.”

Judge Evelyn Cross adjusted her reading glasses, looking down at the two trembling defendants with cold, majestic authority.

“In my thirty-five years on the federal bench, I have rarely witnessed such grotesque, calculated depravity executed against an innocent family,” Judge Cross stated.

“Vivienne Vance and Bradley Thorne, bail is denied with prejudice on all sixty-two counts.”

“The defendants will remain remanded in maximum-security federal custody at the Federal Correctional Institution in Seagoville pending trial.”

Judge Cross slammed her heavy wooden gavel onto the bench: BAM!

“Court is officially adjourned!”

The courtroom erupted into quiet murmurs of solemn approval as the federal marshals dragged Vivienne and Thorne through the heavy iron prisoner exits.

The legal trap was sprung, the debts were paid in full, and the truth had conquered the darkness.
