Chapter 9 - THE LAST TRAP

The courthouse was surrounded.
But Detective Collins didn't lower his weapon.
“Put your hands up.”
Daniel's father smiled.
“You're too late.”
He pressed a button.
Every courtroom monitor switched on.
Bank accounts appeared.
Trust documents.
Medical records.
Private photographs.
And one final video.
It showed me.
Standing beside Lily's hospital bed.
The footage had been edited to make it look as though I was deliberately withholding medication.
I felt sick.
“That's fake.”
“I know.”
The old man smiled.
“But the public doesn't.”
He had planned everything.
The scandal.
The custody petition.
The medical records.
The false accusations.
Even the hospital incident.
He had wanted the court to believe I was an unfit mother.
Then the trust would be transferred.
But he had made one mistake.
Lily's smartwatch.
The old man looked at it.
“That little device caused more trouble than I expected.”
Lily looked up.
“It remembers.”
The man frowned.
“What?”
Lily pressed the screen.
A recording began.
His own voice.
“We need the child alive.”
Another voice answered.
Daniel.
“And if she survives?”
“Then blame the mother.”
The old man's expression changed.
He hadn't known Lily had recorded their private conversation.
Detective Collins smiled.
“That's enough.”
The man reached for his jacket.
An officer tackled him.
Security guards outside surrendered moments later.
The courthouse doors opened.
Police flooded inside.
Daniel broke down.
Evelyn began screaming.
Claire collapsed into a chair.
And Michael stood completely still.
The truth was finally out.
But I wasn't thinking about any of them.
I was thinking about Lily.
I knelt beside her.
“You saved us.”
She smiled.
“My watch saved us.”
I hugged her.
Then Detective Collins approached.
“There is one more thing.”
“What?”
He handed me a document.
“Your daughter's trust.”
I looked at it.
The balance was listed.
$12,814,620.
But below it was a second figure.
$3,200,000.
“What is this?”
Collins shook his head.
“Money transferred after the hospital incident.”
“By whom?”
He pointed to the signature.
Claire Morgan.
I looked at Claire.
She began crying.
“I was trying to undo what Daniel did.”
“How?”
“I transferred the stolen money back.”
“Then why didn't you tell us?”
“Because I was afraid.”
Again.
Everyone had been afraid.
But this time, someone had finally chosen the truth.
Claire handed me another document.
“The trust is legally yours to manage until Lily turns twenty-five.”
I stared.
“Mine?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Lily's biological mother cannot serve as trustee.”
I looked toward Lily.
“And Michael?”
Claire shook her head.
“He has no legal claim to the trust.”
Michael looked relieved rather than disappointed.
“I don't want the money.”
I stared at him.
“What do you want?”
He looked at Lily.
“To know my daughter.”
Lily looked at me.
Then at him.
“Can he?”
I swallowed.
“That decision is yours.”
Lily thought for a moment.
Then she walked toward Michael.
She held out her hand.
“You can start by telling me why you never told me.”
Michael began crying.
“I was scared.”
Lily nodded.
“Adults are always scared.”
Then she hugged him.
For the first time that night, I saw something that didn't look like a conspiracy.
It looked like a family trying to heal.
But there was still one person missing.
Daniel.
He had disappeared during the chaos.
Detective Collins received a call.
His face changed.
“Where is he?”
Collins looked at me.
“The hospital.”
My heart stopped.
“Why?”
“He's looking for Lily's medical file.”
I grabbed my coat.
“Why?”
Collins whispered:
“Because he believes there's one document that can still destroy you.”
We rushed back.
And when we reached Lily's hospital room, the file was open on the bed.
