Chapter 1 - THE SECOND INJECTOR

Michael's voice remained on the phone.

“Once the first injector disappears, make sure the second one never reaches the child.”

The emergency room seemed to become completely silent.

I stared at Detective Collins.

He stared at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Then Michael said, “Are you still there?”

I forced myself to breathe.

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“I'm at the hospital.”

A pause.

“With Lily?”

“Yes.”

His voice changed.

“You need to listen to me carefully.”

Detective Collins silently pointed toward my phone.

Put it on speaker.

I obeyed.

Michael continued.

“Don't let Daniel take Lily home.”

My heart tightened.

“Why?”

“Because your husband isn't the person you think he is.”

I looked through the glass.

Daniel was standing at the nurses' station, speaking to a doctor.

He looked exhausted.

Devastated.

Like a frightened father who had almost lost his little girl.

But suddenly, I remembered something.

When Lily had been rushed into the ambulance, Daniel hadn't asked where the second injector was.

He had only asked whether the doctors could save her.

At the time, I thought he was in shock.

Now I wasn't so sure.

Detective Collins whispered, “Ask him how he knows about the second injector.”

I swallowed.

“How did you know there was a second injector?”

Michael went silent.

Too long.

Then he said:

“Because I put it there.”

My entire body went cold.

“What?”

“I knew Evelyn would try something.”

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“I couldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because someone was listening.”

Detective Collins motioned for me to keep him talking.

I asked, “Who?”

Michael breathed heavily.

“I don't know.”

“That's not good enough.”

“I found out three weeks ago that someone had accessed Lily's trust account.”

My heart stopped.

“How much?”

“$600,000.”

“Six hundred thousand dollars?”

“Yes.”

“Where did it go?”

“To a company called Hartwell Medical Consulting.”

I looked at Detective Collins.

He immediately wrote the name down.

“That company belongs to Evelyn's brother,” Michael said.

I closed my eyes.

“So this wasn't just about Lily's inheritance.”

“No.”

“What was it about?”

Michael lowered his voice.

“Lily's trust isn't worth three million anymore.”

I stared at him.

“What do you mean?”

“It was worth almost twelve million.”

I couldn't breathe.

“Where did the other nine million go?”

Michael didn't answer.

Then a nurse rushed into the room.

“Ma'am?”

I turned.

“Lily's monitor is showing something unusual.”

I ran toward her.

“What happened?”

“She woke up.”

My heart jumped.

I entered the room.

Lily's eyes slowly opened.

“Mommy?”

I grabbed her hand.

“I'm here.”

Her lips trembled.

“Don't let Daddy take me.”

I froze.

“What?”

Lily looked toward the doorway.

“Daddy knows about the other medicine.”

Behind me, Detective Collins immediately turned.

Daniel was standing outside the room.

And he had heard every word.
