Chapter 7 - THE JUDGE WHO TOOK THE MONEY

The courthouse was packed.

Reporters had somehow learned about the case.

Cameras waited outside.

My face was already appearing on local news.

MOTHER ACCUSED OF ENDANGERING ALLERGIC CHILD.

I felt sick reading the headline.

The truth didn't matter yet.

Only the story did.

Inside the courtroom, Claire Morgan stood beside Daniel.

Evelyn was missing.

Michael was under police protection.

And Lily sat beside me.

The judge entered.

Judge Warren.

The same judge who had signed the emergency custody order.

Claire immediately began.

“Your Honor, my client believes the child is in imminent danger.”

I wanted to scream.

Detective Collins sat behind me.

He whispered:

“Don't react.”

Claire presented the medical records.

She claimed I had repeatedly failed to protect Lily.

Then she introduced a photograph.

It showed me asleep beside Lily's hospital bed.

“Your Honor, this demonstrates the mother's inability to remain alert during a medical emergency.”

I stared at her.

I had been awake for thirty-six hours.

My daughter had nearly died.

And they were using a photograph of me sleeping for ten minutes as evidence of neglect.

Claire smiled.

Then she said:

“We are asking the court to transfer temporary custody to the child's father.”

Daniel stood.

I looked at him.

He wouldn't meet my eyes.

The judge turned toward me.

“Do you have evidence?”

Detective Collins stood.

“We do.”

He connected Lily's smartwatch to the courtroom system.

The first recording played.

Evelyn's voice.

Michael's voice.

Daniel's voice.

The plan.

The money.

The missing injector.

The custody scheme.

The courtroom went silent.

Claire's face tightened.

“This recording may have been manipulated.”

Collins shook his head.

“It was authenticated by the hospital's digital forensic unit.”

The judge looked nervous.

Then another recording played.

Claire's voice.

“If the mother refuses, remove the child immediately.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Claire went pale.

“That recording is illegal.”

Collins smiled.

“We obtained a warrant.”

Claire looked at Judge Warren.

“Your Honor…”

But the judge suddenly stood.

“I need a recess.”

Collins blocked the door.

“Not yet.”

The judge stared at him.

“What are you implying?”

Collins placed an envelope on the desk.

“Your bank records.”

The judge's face collapsed.

Inside were payments from an offshore account.

$25,000.

$50,000.

$75,000.

All from a company controlled by Daniel.

The courtroom erupted.

The judge sat down.

Claire stepped backward.

Daniel suddenly ran.

Two officers tackled him before he reached the doors.

He screamed:

“You don't understand!”

I looked at him.

“Then explain it.”

He looked at Lily.

“Your mother doesn't know the truth!”

Lily hid behind me.

Daniel shouted:

“Michael isn't your biological father!”

Everyone froze.

I turned toward him.

“You just said he was.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I lied.”

Michael looked stunned.

Daniel continued:

“The DNA test was fake.”

I stared.

“Then who is Lily's biological father?”

Daniel's eyes moved toward Claire.

She closed her eyes.

“No,” she whispered.

Daniel said:

“Claire knows.”

Claire began crying.

Because the secret she had protected for eight years was finally exposed.

May you like

She wasn't Lily's attorney.

She was her biological mother.
