Chapter 8 - THE SECRET BENEATH THE DNA TEST

The courtroom became chaos.

Claire Morgan.

The respected attorney.

The woman who had represented Daniel.

The woman who had filed the custody petition.

She was Lily's biological mother.

I couldn't breathe.

“That isn't possible.”

Claire looked at me.

“It is.”

Lily stared at her.

“Who are you?”

Claire began crying.

“I gave you up.”

“Why?”

“Because I couldn't keep you.”

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Did Michael?”

“No.”

“Then why did you tell me Michael was her father?”

“Because I needed you to believe it.”

“For what?”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“To protect the trust.”

Claire continued.

“When Lily was born, Daniel discovered that her biological mother had a legal claim under an old family agreement.”

“What agreement?”

“My father was one of the trustees.”

I stared.

“Your father?”

Claire nodded.

“He created a side agreement that protected my daughter.”

“Your daughter?”

“Lily.”

My mind raced.

“But why would you give her to me?”

Claire's voice broke.

“Because Daniel convinced me that you could give her a normal life.”

“And now?”

“Now he wants the money.”

I turned toward Daniel.

“You used your own daughter.”

He said nothing.

Claire admitted that Daniel had discovered the trust could grow substantially if Lily remained the beneficiary.

He needed control of her.

But he couldn't legally obtain it.

So he created a chain of lies.

He convinced me that Lily was his child.

He convinced Michael that he had a biological connection.

He manipulated Evelyn.

He paid Dr. Harris.

He sold Lily's medical data.

And when the trust became too large to control, he created the allergy incident.

But Claire had one final secret.

“The person who ordered the entire operation wasn't Daniel.”

I looked at her.

“Who?”

She pointed toward the courtroom entrance.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Red hair.

Black coat.

Evelyn.

She smiled.

“You finally figured it out.”

Police immediately surrounded her.

Evelyn didn't resist.

She looked at Lily.

“You ruined everything.”

Lily stepped closer to me.

I held her hand.

Evelyn continued:

“Daniel was only a tool.”

I asked:

“Then who was the mastermind?”

She laughed.

“Your husband's father.”

My heart stopped.

“Daniel's father died years ago.”

“No.”

She smiled.

“He faked his death.”

Detective Collins stared.

“Where is he?”

Evelyn's smile disappeared.

“That's the problem.”

“What problem?”

“He's already inside the courthouse.”

Everyone looked around.

Then the courtroom doors locked.

The lights went out.

A voice came over the intercom.

“Ladies and gentlemen, nobody leaves.”

Lily squeezed my hand.

“Mommy?”

I held her close.

A single emergency light came on.

And a man stood at the judge's bench.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Smiling.

Daniel's father.

The man everyone believed had been dead for ten years.

He looked directly at Lily.

“My granddaughter.”

Then he looked at me.

“You've caused me a great deal of trouble.”

Detective Collins drew his weapon.

“Hands where I can see them.”

The man laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

He pointed toward the ceiling.

The courthouse doors were already surrounded.

Not by police.

By armed private security.

Then he said:

“The trust belongs to me.”
