Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH AT THE DINNER TABLE

..

One year later, the family gathered for the first time without lawyers surrounding them.

Evelyn had pleaded guilty to several financial offenses.

She had also cooperated with investigators.

Her sentence was still pending.

But she had written Clara a letter.

Not an excuse.

Not a justification.

An apology.

I confused control with love.

I thought keeping everyone obedient would keep everyone safe.

I was wrong.

Clara read it quietly.

Julian sat beside her.

“You don't have to forgive her.”

“I know.”

“Do you want to?”

Clara looked toward the window.

“I don't know yet.”

Nathaniel joined them.

“You don't owe anyone forgiveness.”

Clara smiled.

“That might be the first healthy thing anyone in this family has said.”

They laughed.

For the first time, the laughter didn't feel forced.

Then Clara's phone rang.

Her doctor.

She answered.

“Hello?”

Her expression changed.

Julian immediately noticed.

“What is it?”

Clara covered the phone.

“They got the new test results.”

Her hands trembled.

The room became silent.

She listened.

Then slowly smiled.

Julian stood.

“Clara?”

She ended the call.

“Everything is okay.”

He exhaled.

“And?”

She looked at him.

“It's a boy.”

Julian laughed through tears.

Nathaniel hugged his sister.

For a few seconds, the past seemed far away.

Then Clara touched her stomach.

“He'll know the truth.”

Julian nodded.

“But he won't inherit the hatred.”

Clara looked around the room.

“No.”

“He'll inherit something better.”

“What?”

May you like

“A family that finally learned how to tell the truth.”
