Chapter 6 - THE MOTHER'S CONFESSION

..
Julian moved between Evelyn and Nathaniel.
“Put it down.”
Evelyn's hands trembled.
For the first time, she looked old.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just exhausted.
“I never wanted anyone to die.”
Clara stared at her.
“You pushed me.”
“I panicked.”
“You tried to erase my medical records.”
“I was protecting my son.”
Julian shook his head.
“Which son?”
Evelyn lowered the gun.
“Both of you.”
Nathaniel laughed bitterly.
“You didn't even know I existed until it was too late.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“I knew.”
Nathaniel's expression changed.
“What?”
“I knew you survived.”
The room fell silent.
Evelyn explained that after Margaret disappeared, she discovered Nathaniel had been hidden with a family friend.
She had secretly monitored him for years.
But she never contacted him.
Why?
Because Nathaniel had the original trust documents.
Documents that could expose the entire family.
“I was afraid,” Evelyn admitted.
Julian stared at her.
“You destroyed people's lives because you were afraid?”
“Yes.”
“And Dad?”
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't kill your father.”
Nathaniel stepped forward.
“Who did?”
Evelyn looked at Clara.
“Margaret's brother.”
Clara froze.
“My uncle?”
“He believed your father had stolen from the family.”
“He was wrong.”
“I know.”
Evelyn's voice broke.
“But by the time I learned the truth, your father was dead.”
Julian lowered his voice.
“Then why did you continue lying?”
“Because once I started, I couldn't stop.”
She looked at Clara.
“I convinced myself that controlling the truth was the same as protecting the family.”
Clara shook her head.
“You didn't protect us.”
“No.”
Evelyn finally admitted it.
“I destroyed us.”
Then sirens sounded outside.
Nathaniel looked through the window.
Police cars were surrounding the estate.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I called them.”
Julian stared.
“You?”
“Yes.”
She put the gun on the floor.
May you like
“Someone has to finally tell the truth.”
