Chapter 1 - THE ENVELOPE

..
Julian caught Clara so close to the marble floor that his knees nearly gave out beneath him.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Clara's hands were locked around his jacket.
Her breathing came in short, terrified bursts.
“She pushed me,” she whispered.
Julian looked up.
Evelyn stood on the second-floor balcony with one hand resting casually against the railing.
She wasn't crying.
She wasn't shaking.
She wasn't even pretending to be shocked.
Instead, she smiled.
That smile frightened Julian more than Clara's fall.
“Mother,” he said quietly.
Evelyn tilted her head.
“It was an accident.”
Clara stared at her.
“You pushed me.”
“I told you,” Evelyn replied calmly. “You lost your balance.”
Julian looked down at the torn envelope still lying against his chest.
CONFIDENTIAL — PATIENT: CLARA HARRINGTON.
His fingers tightened around it.
“Why do you have my wife's medical records?”
Evelyn's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Julian noticed.
For years, he had known his mother as a woman who could control every room simply by entering it.
Tonight, for the first time, he saw fear behind her eyes.
“I found them,” Evelyn said.
“That isn't an answer.”
“It is the only answer you're getting.”
Clara slowly pushed herself upright.
“My doctor gave me that envelope yesterday.”
Julian turned toward her.
“Yesterday?”
She nodded.
“He told me there was something in my prenatal screening that needed further testing.”
Julian's heart stopped.
“What something?”
“I don't know.”
Evelyn suddenly laughed.
It was quiet.
Almost affectionate.
“You really don't understand what you've married into, do you?”
Julian stepped forward.
“What did you do?”
Evelyn reached inside her coat.
Julian immediately moved between her and Clara.
But Evelyn only pulled out her phone.
She held it up.
On the screen was an old photograph.
A young man stood beside a woman outside a hospital.
Julian recognized the man instantly.
His father.
But the woman wasn't his mother.
Julian stared.
“Who is she?”
Evelyn's smile disappeared.
“She is the reason your father died.”
Clara felt her stomach tighten.
Then Evelyn added six words that changed everything.
“And she was Clara's mother.”
The hallway went completely silent.
Clara's face went pale.
“My mother?”
Evelyn looked directly at her.
“Yes.”
Then the lights suddenly went out.

And somewhere downstairs, a door slammed.
