Chapter 5 - The Cry That Froze Manhattan

Arthur Sterling did not look at the governors.

He did not acknowledge the senators who bowed as he passed.

His steel-gray gaze cut straight through the glittering ballroom like an executioner’s blade, locking directly onto the trembling little girl in the corner.

Chloe stood frozen, her small shoes pinching her feet, her bruised cheek throbbing under the suffocating layer of makeup.

Then, her swollen eyes met Arthur’s.

Her tiny lips parted in absolute shock.

She had spent every weekend of her short life sitting on that old man’s lap at the private Sterling estate in Vermont, learning how to paint and listening to bedtime stories.

To the world, he was the terrifying Titan of American capital.

To Chloe, he was just Grandpa Artie, the gentle giant who baked cookies with her in secret.

Vivienne pushed Chloe forward, trying to shove her toward the approaching billionaire.

“Go on, show respect to Sir Sterling!” Vivienne hissed, digging her fingers into the child’s neck.

Chloe didn't curtsy.

She didn't recite the polite script Vivienne had beaten into her memory.

With a desperate burst of strength, the five-year-old wrenched her arm out of Vivienne’s claw-like grip.

She abandoned her shiny leather shoes on the marble floor.

She ran.

Her little bare feet pounded against the polished floor, tears streaming freely down her face, washing away the cheap foundation to reveal the violent purple contusions underneath.

“Grandpa!” Chloe screamed, her voice cracking with raw, unadulterated agony that echoed to the highest vaulted ceilings of the hall.

Five hundred elite guests stopped breathing.

Chloe threw herself against Arthur Sterling’s tailored trousers, wrapping her tiny arms around his knee.

Arthur immediately dropped to one knee, ignoring the dirt of the floor, and scooped the weeping child directly into his arms.

Chloe buried her bleeding face into the lapel of his fifty-thousand-dollar tuxedo.

She pointed her small, trembling finger back at Vivienne and shrieked through her missing teeth:

“Grandpa… she hit me!”

“She slapped me in our living room and knocked my teeth out!”

“She said she would lock me in the basement forever!”

The entire St. Regis ballroom fell into a dead, horrifying silence.

You could hear the ice melting in the crystal buckets.

Arthur Sterling slowly turned Chloe in his arms, resting her against his shoulder so that the bright gallery spotlights hit her battered face directly.

Two fresh bloody gaps where her baby incisors used to be were visible to every camera, every CEO, and every politician in the United States.

Arthur’s face did not contort with rage.

It became utterly, perfectly vacant—the calm that precedes a catastrophic hurricane.

He raised his cold, terrifying eyes and locked them onto Dominic and Vivienne.

“Who laid hands on my blood?” Arthur’s voice was barely above a whisper, yet it shook the crystal chandeliers overhead.
