Chapter 1 - The Cold Departure

The sound of rain lashing against the tinted windows of the Maybach felt like applause for my rebirth.

In the rearview mirror, the Thorne estate looked like an arrogant fortress built on hollow lies.

Ten minutes ago, Dominic’s security guards had ripped Chloe from my arms under the threat of a loaded legal injunction.

They threw my daughter into a limousine destined for the St. Regis ballroom.

They wanted her to play the happy little prop beside Vivienne for the billionaire charity gala.

They truly believed I walked out into the storm with nothing but the clothes on my back.

They thought I was just an uneducated orphan who lost her only meal ticket.

My trembling hands gripped the leather steering wheel of the discreet black sedan parked at the estate gates.

I wiped the smear of my daughter’s blood from my wrist.

That stain was no longer a symbol of grief.

It was a death warrant signed in blood against the entire Thorne bloodline.

I picked up the secure satellite receiver resting on the passenger seat.

The display flickered with a single golden crest that had not been activated in over two thousand days.

A voice answered before the first ring even completed.

It was deep, ancient, and possessed the authority to move global markets with a whispered syllable.

“Cynthia?”

Tears finally broke through my cold composure, hot and furious against my cheeks.

“Father,” I whispered into the receiver.

“They struck Chloe.”

“They knocked her baby teeth out onto the marble floor and forced her into their car.”

The silence on the other end of the line was heavier than a falling skyscraper.

The ambient noise of Wall Street trading floors instantly vanished from the background.

“Where are they taking my granddaughter, Cynthia?”

“The St. Regis Grand Ballroom,” I replied, staring at the flashing red lights of the downtown skyline.

“Dominic thinks he is closing the federal aerospace merger tonight.”

“He thinks he can introduce Vivienne as his new fiancée while flaunting my bruised daughter as a charitable conquest.”

A cold, terrifying laugh echoed through the speaker.

“Arthur Sterling has stayed in the shadows for too long, my child.”

“For six years, I honored your wish to live an ordinary life with an ordinary man.”

“Now, let Manhattan remember who owns the ground they walk upon.”

“A motorcade of forty armored Phantoms is already routing to your location.”

“Your gown has arrived from Paris by supersonic transport.”

“Dry your eyes, Cynthia.”

“Tonight, we do not weep.”

“Tonight, we hunt.”
