Chapter 4 - The Phantom Sovereign

The grand ballroom of the St. Regis was an ocean of crystal chandeliers, rare orchids, and five hundred of the wealthiest figures in North America.

Governors, senators, tech founders, and old-money banking dynasties mingled over caviar and champagne.

Dominic stood at the elevated VIP table, clinking glasses with the Deputy Secretary of Commerce.

“To the future, Dominic,” the official said, raising his flute.

“Your expansion into federal defense tech is guaranteed once the lead investor signs off tonight.”

Dominic grinned, his chest swelling with intoxicating pride.

“My capital backing is limitless, Mr. Secretary.”

“Thorne Global does not fail.”

Suddenly, the massive double doors at the entrance of the ballroom groaned.

The orchestra, which had been playing a soft Mozart concerto, missed a beat and ground to a sudden, awkward halt.

A strange, suffocating pressure filled the room.

It was the kind of silence that only occurs when true, apex power enters an enclosure.

Four towering men in tailored tactical suits walked through the doorway, their earpieces glowing with encrypted blue light.

They did not ask for clearance.

They simply parted the sea of billionaires like water.

Behind them walked Arthur Sterling.

He had not stepped foot in a public social venue in over two decades.

To the younger generation of venture capitalists, he was a myth—the invisible titan who controlled the maritime shipping lanes, orbital satellite networks, and the central debt reserves of three global superpowers.

To the older generation, his presence was a terrifying omen of imminent financial judgment.

The CEO of JP Morgan nearly dropped his glass onto the parquet floor.

“Good God Almighty…” the banker whispered, his face turning entirely pale.

“Is that Arthur Sterling?”

The room gasped in unison.

Whispers spread through the crowd like a wildfire fueled by dry timber.

“He’s alive?”

“Why is the Sovereign of Wall Street at a Thorne charity gala?”

Dominic’s heart skipped a violent beat.

His eyes went wide, and his arrogant smirk froze into a mask of pure panic.

“Arthur Sterling…” Dominic breathed, grabbing Vivienne’s arm with bruising force.

“He’s here for my deal.”

“He must have heard about our aerospace expansion and came to personally bless the contract!”

Beatrice Thorne hurried over, her face flushed with frantic social ambition.

“Dominic, this is our moment!” she hissed in ecstatic desperation.

“If the Sterling patriarch endorses our family tonight, the Thornes will be untouchable for generations!”

“Bring the child!”

“Rich old men love family values!”

Vivienne aggressively yanked Chloe forward by her arm, ignoring the child’s soft cry of pain.

“Walk properly, you stupid girl!” Vivienne snarled softly.

“Look adorable and smile at the old man, or I’ll lock you in the basement when we get home!”
