Chapter 2 - Blood and Diamond

The private elevator at the Sterling Tower penthouse opened with a soft chime.

Fifty personal aides, elite trauma physicians, and forensic specialists stood in two flawless rows, bowing their heads in unison.

At the end of the grand hall stood Arthur Sterling.

His silver hair was combed back with aristocratic precision, his tuxedo tailored from bespoke midnight-blue cashmere.

His piercing steel-gray eyes, identical to my own, locked onto the bloodstain on my sleeve.

The air in the room dropped below freezing.

“Doctor Vance,” Arthur commanded without looking away from me.

The chief of surgery at Presbyterian stepped forward immediately.

“The forensic dental records and trauma kits are ready for the young lady at the venue, Sir Sterling.”

“Every bruise on Chloe’s body will be documented under federal chain of custody within the hour.”

I walked forward and threw the signed divorce papers onto the mahogany desk.

Arthur glanced at Dominic’s arrogant signature and gave a dismissive flick of his finger.

His chief legal counsel picked up the document with silver tweezers and dropped it into an incinerator tray.

“A standard divorce is for civilized human beings, Cynthia,” Arthur said softly.

“What we are serving the Thorne family tonight is total financial and social annihilation.”

“Did you bring the ledger?” I asked, unbuttoning the damp coat.

Alistair, our family’s supreme financial executor, stepped forward and opened a carbon-fiber briefcase.

Inside lay the true foundation of Thorne Global.

For six years, Dominic believed his sudden rise to corporate dominance was the result of his own genius.

He never knew that every government grant, every institutional loan, and every supply chain miracle was secretly orchestrated by my trust fund.

I had channeled four billion dollars into his dying family business to protect his fragile ego.

I let him believe he was a king while I quietly held the deed to his kingdom.

“The revocable proxy has been canceled,” Alistair reported calmly.

“The moment you step onto the ballroom floor, every Thorne asset across seven continents will freeze automatically.”

“Their private jets will be grounded mid-flight.”

“Their offshore accounts in Zurich and the Caymans will be seized by international audit teams.”

A stylist approached, carrying a garment bag bearing the royal seal of Haute Couture.

Inside was the legendary Sterling Midnight gown—woven with three thousand black diamonds that absorbed the ambient light like a bottomless void.

I looked at my reflection in the floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the glowing streets of Manhattan.

The meek housewife who cooked dinner and endured the mother-in-law’s insults was gone.

The Empress of Sterling had returned to claim her blood debt.
