Chapter 9 - The Mother's Betrayal

Two weeks later, the formal trial of State v. Santiago Vance and Nancy Vance began in earnest.
It was a legal execution.
Samantha Duncan and the State Prosecutor systematically dismantled every single line of defense constructed by Richard Vance. They called the state forensic toxicologist, who demonstrated on live television how the chemical compound in the tea leaves operated. They called the private handwriting expert, who proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Santiago had forged my signature on twenty-four separate financial wire documents.
And then, on the fourth day of the trial, the prosecution called their star witness: Nancy’s personal financial accountant, a man named Arthur Pendelton, who had accepted a full immunity plea deal in exchange for his state testimony.
Mr. Pendelton took the witness stand, adjusted his glasses, and looked directly at the jury.
"Mr. Pendelton," the Prosecutor asked, "did Nancy Vance ever explicitly state her intentions regarding Mrs. Clara Vance's private estate?"
"Yes, sir," Pendelton answered clearly into the microphone. "On multiple occasions over the last three years. Mrs. Nancy Vance instructed me to prepare shell corporate entities in the Bahamas specifically designed to absorb the liquid assets of the Clara Vance Private Family Trust once Clara was 'permanently removed' from the estate."
"Permanently removed?" the Prosecutor pressed. "What did she mean by that term?"
"She stated that once the chemical administration rendered Clara mentally incompetent or physically incapacitated, Santiago would execute the conservatorship paperwork," Pendelton revealed. "If that failed, she stated that an 'accidental overdose' would settle the matter permanently."
A loud gasp rippled through the jury box. Several jurors looked at Nancy with expressions of absolute, horrified disgust.
Nancy’s defense attorney tried desperately to object, but the evidence was insurmountable.
When Santiago took the stand in his own defense, his legal strategy collapsed into a pathetic, cowardly attempt to blame his mother for every single crime.
"She made me do it!" Santiago wept on the stand, clutching his paper tissue. "My mother controlled my bank accounts! She threatened to disown me if I didn't give Clara the tea every morning! I didn't want to hit her! My mother told me that if I didn't assert physical authority, Clara would kick us out!"
Sitting at the defense table, Nancy spat on the carpet, muttering curses at her son under her breath.
The jury deliberated for precisely forty-two minutes.
When they returned to the courtroom, the foreperson stood up, holding the verdict sheets.
"On Count 1, Felony Domestic Battery: Guilty."
"On Count 2, Poisoning with Intent to Cause Severe Bodily Harm: Guilty."
"On Count 3, Grand Larceny and Forgery: Guilty."
"On Count 4, RICO Conspiracy and Attempted Estate Extortion: Guilty on all counts."
Judge Katherine Mercer looked down from her high bench, her expression stern as iron.
"Santiago Vance," Judge Mercer declared, her voice ringing across the silent courtroom. "You are a cowardly, sociopathic predator who betrayed the sacred trust of marriage to torment, poison, and rob a woman who welcomed you into her home. I sentence you to twenty-four years in state prison without the possibility of early parole."
Santiago collapsed forward onto the table, weeping hysterically, his body shaking violently.
"Nancy Vance," Judge Mercer continued, turning her icy gaze onto the mother. "You are the mastermind of an appalling, multi-generational criminal syndicate. You used your own son as a weapon to destroy an innocent woman's life for financial greed. I sentence you to twenty-eight years in maximum-security state custody."
