Chapter 3 - The Lawn of Reckoning

At precisely 11:52 a.m., the smooth, low purr of a high-end European V8 engine echoed from the bottom of the hill.

Santiago’s black sports car turned into the driveway, followed closely by a silver luxury sedan. Sitting in the passenger seat of Santiago’s car was his mother, Nancy. She was wearing an elaborate pearl necklace, a mink coat, and a wide, triumphant smile. She was looking at the estate as if she were a queen returning to claim her castle.

The sports car reached the iron security gate at the entrance of the property. Santiago slowed down, tapped the integrated transponder on his visor, and waited for the gates to part.

Nothing happened.

The heavy iron gates remained completely motionless.

Santiago frowned, tapping the button again, harder this time. The red light on his visor blinked uselessly. He muttered something under his breath, reached for his phone, and opened the smart-home application to manually override the gate.

A bright red error message flashed across his screen: ACCESS DENIED. USER ACCOUNT TERMINATED.

"What is wrong with this stupid gate?" Nancy complained shrilly from the passenger seat, adjusting her mink coat. "Tell that useless girl to open it! She should be standing at the front door waiting for us anyway!"

Santiago gritted his teeth, pulled out his physical master key, stepped out of the car, and walked to the gate's manual control panel. He inserted the key into the brass lock and turned it.

The key snapped in half with a sharp metallic crack.

"Damn it!" Santiago roared, kicking the iron bar of the gate.

He marched back to his car, grabbed his phone, and dialed my number. On the front porch, fifty yards away, I pulled my phone from my coat pocket, looked at his caller ID, and hit Decline.

An instant later, the iron gates slowly began to slide open.

Santiago let out a smug, satisfied breath. "Thought so," he muttered to Nancy. "She knows better than to play games."

He drove through the gates, accelerating up the winding driveway. But as his car cleared the crest of the hill and the front lawn came into full view, his foot slammed onto the brake so hard the tires screeched violently against the wet gravel.

Nancy gasped, her hands flying to her mouth in utter horror.

The pristine, manicured front lawn of the estate was completely covered in a chaotic, colorful carpet of Santiago’s entire wardrobe. His tailored Tom Ford suits were draped over the rose bushes; his Italian leather shoes were scattered across the flagstone walkway; his silk ties hung like limp snakes from the low tree branches; and open, overturned suitcases lay scattered beside piles of his shirts, underwear, and winter coats.

In the center of the flagstone porch, standing tall in a white wool dress, stood me.

Flanking me were Samantha Duncan holding a legal ledger, and two tall, uniformed police officers with their arms crossed over their chests.

Santiago sat in his car for three full seconds, his brain completely failing to compute the scene before him. Then, a wave of raw, violent rage flushed his face deep crimson. He threw his car door open, slammed it shut with deafening force, and marched up the driveway toward the porch.

"Clara!" Santiago screamed, his voice echoing off the stone walls of the mansion. "Have you lost your fucking mind?! What is the meaning of this?!"

Nancy scrambled out of the silver sedan behind him, her mink coat fluttering as she hurried after her son, her face contorted in hysterical outrage. "Look at my son’s clothes! Look at what this crazy, barren bitch did to your expensive suits, Santiago! Call the police immediately!"

Santiago reached the bottom of the porch steps, his fists clenched, his chest heaving as he prepared to charge up the stairs.

"Step back, sir!" Officer Miller commanded, stepping forward to the edge of the stairs, his hand resting firmly on his taser holster.

Santiago stopped mid-stride, blinking in shock at the uniformed officer. "What? Officer, what are you doing on my property?! This woman has lost her mind! She’s destroying my personal property! I want her arrested right now!"

Samantha Duncan stepped forward, pulling a thick, white document stamped with a red judicial seal from her binder.

"Mr. Vance," Samantha said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp, lethal cadence. "First of all, this is not your property. It has never been your property. This estate is owned solely and entirely by the Clara Vance Private Family Trust, established three years before Mrs. Vance ever had the misfortune of meeting you."

Santiago let out a harsh, arrogant laugh. "Don't give me that lawyer bullshit! We are married! Marital property laws dictate that I have full residential rights to this house!"

"You signed a binding, unassailable Prenuptial Agreement six years ago, Mr. Vance," Samantha replied smoothly, holding up a second document. "Clause 14 explicitly waives any and all marital claims, tenancy rights, or equity interests in this residential real estate in the event of separation, divorce, or domestic violation."

"Separation?!" Santiago shouted, his eyes darting frantically toward me. "Clara, stop this ridiculous performance! You’re angry about last night? Fine! We can talk about it inside! Tell these officers to leave!"

"You aren't going inside, Santiago," I said. My voice was quiet, but in the clear winter air, it carried with the force of an avalanche. "You are never stepping foot inside my home again."
