Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Cup

Samantha picked up the final sheet of paper inside the blue folder. It was a certified laboratory toxicology report stamped with a red seal from the State Forensic Pathology Unit.
As Samantha read the technical analysis, her hand began to shake violently.
"This... this can't be real," Samantha whispered, her voice barely audible.
"It’s real," I said, my tone flat, devoid of any warmth. "For the past three years, Santiago insisted on brewing my morning herbal tea every single day. He made a grand performance of it—bringing it to my bed, kissing my cheek, telling me how much he wanted me to relax and stay healthy so we could start a family."
"What was in the tea, Clara?" Samantha asked, her eyes wide with horror.
"A synthetic, long-acting endocrine disruptor called Desogestrel-E2," I revealed. "A high-concentration chemical compound used in experimental veterinary medicine to induce temporary chemical sterility and severe hormonal imbalances in livestock. It’s odorless, tasteless, and completely undetectable in standard blood panels unless you specifically test for synthetic synthetic hormone analogs."
Samantha covered her mouth, a horrified gasp escaping her lips. "He was poisoning you... to prevent you from getting pregnant?"
"He was poisoning me to make me appear 'barren,'" I said, the cold fury inside my chest burning brighter than a supernova. "Every time I failed a pregnancy test, Nancy would come over to the house, sit at my dining table, and call me broken, useless, and defective. They used my 'infertility' as a psychological weapon to destroy my self-esteem, isolate me from my friends, and lay the groundwork for declaring me emotionally unstable!"
"My God..." Samantha gasped, sinking back into her leather chair. "That is attempted murder, biological assault, and poisoning!"
"I took my daily tea canister to the private toxicology lab two weeks ago," I continued, pointing to the lab results. "The concentration of the toxin found in the dried leaves was high enough to cause permanent organ damage if ingested for another six months. Santiago wasn't just trying to make me infertile... he was slowly destroying my health so I wouldn't have the strength to fight back when they filed for the conservatorship."
Samantha slammed her fist onto the mahogany desk, making the tea cups rattle. "We aren't just filing for divorce anymore, Clara. We are taking this report directly to the State Attorney General and the Special Crimes Unit. This is a federal felony indictment!"
"I already delivered a duplicate copy of the toxicology report and the tea canister to Detective Miller at the precinct an hour ago," I said calmly. "The state prosecutor is adding charges of Poisoning with Intent to Render Incapacitated, Unlawful Distribution of Controlled Chemical Substances, and Attempted Great Bodily Harm."
Samantha looked at me with an expression of profound, unshakeable respect. "You knew all of this... and you sat at that kitchen table last night and let him think he had won?"
"I needed him to strike me on camera, Samantha," I revealed, looking down at my hands. "I needed a clear, undeniable act of physical violence recorded on my security system so the judge would issue the emergency eviction and protective order without giving his lawyers time to file counter-motions. If I had confronted him about the poison first, he would have destroyed the evidence, fled the state, or done something far worse."

Samantha shook her head in awe. "You used his own arrogance against him."
"Santiago believed I was a patient, docile girl who would endure anything to keep her marriage intact," I said softly, looking up at the framed portrait of my father hanging on the wall. "He forgot who raised me."
Before Samantha could respond, her phone began to ring loudly. She glanced at the screen, her eyes narrowing.
"It's Santiago’s corporate defense attorney, Richard Vance," Samantha said, switching the call to speakerphone. "Let's hear what the enemy has to say."
Samantha tapped the screen. "Samantha Duncan speaking."
"Ms. Duncan!" a loud, aggressive male voice boomed through the speaker. "This is Richard Vance representing Santiago Vance. This entire situation is an absolute outrage! My client is currently sitting in a county holding cell on fabricated domestic charges while your client has illegally converted his personal property and locked him out of his marital residence!"
Samantha smiled—a terrifying, predatory smile. "Mr. Vance, I suggest you lower your tone before I add a verbal harassment charge to your client's growing rap sheet."
"Listen to me, Duncan!" Richard Vance barked. "We are filing an emergency motion with the Duty Judge right now to vacate that protective order and reinstate my client’s residential rights! That house is marital property, and my client has a legal right to enter his home!"
"Mr. Vance," Samantha said, her voice dropping into a register of pure, icy triumph. "Before you waste your time filing motions, I suggest you check your secure legal portal. I have just uploaded three documents: the 2018 Prenuptial Agreement waiving all tenancy claims, the certified toxicology report from the State Forensic Pathology Unit, and the secondary indictment warrant issued thirty minutes ago by the District Attorney’s office for Felony Poisoning."
Silence.
Absolute, dead silence on the other end of the line.
"What... what did you just say?" Richard Vance stammered, his aggressive tone vanishing instantly, replaced by a sudden, desperate panic.
"I said your client is not coming home, Mr. Vance," Samantha stated ruthlessly. "And if you attempt to approach Mrs. Vance or this estate again, we will have you cited for aiding and abetting a fleeing felon. Have a wonderful afternoon."

Samantha disconnected the call with a sharp click.
We looked at each other across the mahogany desk, and for the first time in six years, a genuine, radiant smile broke across my face.
