Chapter 4 - The Arrest in the Sunlight

Nancy pushed her way past Santiago, her high heels clicking loudly against the flagstones, her face red with unbridled fury. She pointed a manicured, jewel-encrusted finger directly at my face.

"You ungrateful, low-class tramp!" Nancy shrieked, her voice turning shrill enough to curdle milk. "How dare you speak to my son like that! He gave you his name! He allowed you to live in this house! You couldn't even give him a child, and now you throw his clothes in the mud?! You belong in an asylum!"

"Mrs. Vance," Samantha warned coldy, "I suggest you step back before you are cited for criminal trespass and verbal harassment."

"Shut up, you parasite!" Nancy spat at Samantha. "Santiago, call your lawyers! Call the chief of police! We are not leaving until this bitch is on her knees apologizing to us!"

Santiago turned his glare back onto me, his nostrils flaring, his fists shaking. He took a deliberate, aggressive step up the first stone stair. "Clara, I am giving you one last chance. Walk down here, clean up my clothes, and open that door before I make yesterday look like a gentle warning."

The entire courtyard fell into an absolute, suffocating stillness.

Officer Miller and Officer Davis instantly stepped down two stairs, placing themselves directly between Santiago and me.

"Mr. Vance," Officer Miller said, his tone dropping into a low, dangerous register. "You just made a terroristic threat in the presence of law enforcement officers. Step down to the driveway immediately."

"Threat?!" Santiago scoffed, throwing his hands in the air. "I didn't threat her! She’s my wife! She’s fabricating stories because she’s mentally unstable! Look at her! She probably fell down the stairs and made up a lie to blackmail me!"

I slowly reached into my coat pocket. I pulled out a small, high-definition tablet terminal, unlocked the screen, and turned it toward Santiago, Nancy, and the two police officers.

"Let's review the footage from 11:42 p.m. yesterday evening," I said softly.

I hit Play.

The tablet's external speaker broadcasted crisp, crystal-clear audio into the cold afternoon air, accompanied by 4K high-definition video captured from the hidden hallway security dome.

On the screen, Santiago’s face was visible in terrifying detail. The footage showed me standing near the wall, pressing my hand against my split lip. It showed Santiago raising his heavy right hand and striking my face with full, brutal force. The sickening sound of the dull crack echoed across the quiet lawn.

It showed my shoulder slamming violently into the drywall. It showed the blood dripping onto my white collar.

And then, the audio captured Santiago’s low, sinister whisper:

"You will never humiliate my mother again."

The footage continued to play, showing Santiago calmly pouring himself a glass of whiskey while I sat alone at the kitchen table with an ice pack.

Nancy’s jaw dropped. The color drained from her face so fast she looked like a corpse in a mink coat. She took a slow step backward, her hand flying to her throat, her arrogant demeanor collapsing into absolute shock.

Santiago stood completely frozen on the bottom stair. His eyes bulged as he stared at the screen, his mouth opening and closing without making a single sound. The smug, invincible composure he had worn for six years evaporated into thin air, leaving behind a pathetic, cornered coward.

"Is that footage carrier-stamped and time-verified, Ms. Duncan?" Officer Miller asked, his face hardening into stone as he looked down at Santiago.

"Certified digital metadata, Officer," Samantha confirmed, handing him an official evidence envelope. "Accompanied by the forensic medical report from the county hospital completed at 7:00 a.m. today, documenting a grade-two concussion, a split labial tissue requiring four sutures, and severe contusions to the left shoulder."

Officer Miller looked at Officer Davis and nodded once.

Both officers stepped down the stairs, moving swiftly. Before Santiago could even process what was happening, Officer Davis grabbed his right arm, twisted it behind his back, and slammed him chest-first against the hood of his own sports car.

CLICK-CLACK.

The cold steel handcuffs snapped tightly around Santiago’s wrists.

"Santiago Vance, you are under arrest for felony domestic battery, assault causing bodily harm, and terroristic threats," Officer Davis declared sternly.

"Wait! No! Get your hands off me!" Santiago screamed, struggling against the metal hood, his face pressed against the cold paint. "Clara! Tell them to stop! Clara! You can't do this to me! I'm your husband!"

"You're a violent criminal, Mr. Vance," Officer Miller said, pulling him up by his arms. "And you have the right to remain silent."

Nancy let out a hysterical shriek, lunging forward to grab Officer Miller’s sleeve. "Un-hand my son! You can't arrest him! Do you know who his family is?! I'll have your badges for this!"

Officer Davis turned, grabbing Nancy’s wrist firmly and pushing her back. "Ma'am, if you touch an officer again, you will be joining him in the transport van for obstruction and assaulting a police officer! Sit down in your car and be quiet!"

As the officers dragged Santiago down the driveway toward the arriving police transport cruiser, Santiago turned his head, his face contorted in a mixture of raw terror, humiliation, and frantic desperation.

"Clara!" Santiago yelled, his voice cracking as he looked at his designer suits scattered across the wet grass. "Clara, please! Talk to me! We can fix this! Don't do this to our family!"

I stood at the top of the porch stairs, looking down at him. I did not scream. I did not cry.

I pulled my wool coat tighter around my shoulders, turned my back on him, and walked back inside my house, letting the heavy oak door slam shut behind me.
