Chapter 9 - Martin Vale Wanted to Meet Me

Sunday morning, an email appeared in an address I used only for professional conferences.

No greeting.

No signature.

Just one sentence:

Your grandmother was right about me, but wrong about why. Do not go home tonight.

Rachel traced nothing useful from the message.

But we both knew who had sent it.

Martin.

“Could be a trap,” she said.

“Or a warning.”

“Those aren’t mutually exclusive.”

At 11:00 a.m., another email arrived.

Greenwich Library parking lot. 1 p.m. Come alone if you want the truth about Ruth.

I did not go alone.

Rachel waited inside a nearby car while I approached Martin Vale.

He was seventy now, maybe older, with silver hair and a cane he barely seemed to need.

“You look like her,” he said.

“I’m not here for memories.”

He smiled faintly.

“No. Ruth trained you better than that.”

“Did you steal from me?”

“Yes.”

The answer stunned me.

No excuse.

No denial.

Martin admitted he had helped structure the transfers.

He also admitted he had told Eleanor about the Raven Trust years ago.

“Why?”

“Greed.”

I almost admired the simplicity.

Then his expression changed.

“But your husband became more ambitious than I expected.”

Martin claimed Eric had taken control of the scheme three years earlier.

“He stopped following instructions. He started using your credentials directly.”

“Why warn me now?”

“Because the loan guarantee crosses a line I will not survive.”

I laughed.

“So this is self-preservation.”

“Entirely.”

At least he was honest.

Martin handed me a flash drive.

“Everything I kept.”

“Why should I trust it?”

“You shouldn’t.”

I took it anyway.

Back at Rachel’s office, we opened the encrypted files.

They contained emails, payment schedules, scanned signatures, and years of correspondence.

Then we found a folder with my name.

Inside were photographs.

Me leaving work.

Me at restaurants.

Me attending charity functions.

Some dated before I met Eric.

Someone had been watching me for months.

The final file was an invoice.

CLIENT: ELEANOR HAYES.

May you like

SERVICE: SUBJECT INTRODUCTION AND RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPMENT.

The person assigned to “develop” the relationship was Eric.
