Chapter 13 - Eleanor Wasn't His Mother

The lie had begun long before me.

Eleanor was not Eric’s biological mother.

She was his aunt.

Lillian Hayes, Eleanor’s younger sister, had given birth to Eric at nineteen.

The family had money then, but appearances mattered more than truth.

Eleanor and her husband raised Eric publicly as their son while Lillian disappeared from family life.

Years later, Lillian developed serious financial problems.

Eric had secretly supported her.

That was where some of my stolen money had gone.

For one brief moment, I understood him.

Not forgave.

Understood.

“You could have asked me,” I said.

Eric laughed bitterly.

“And told you my entire childhood was a lie?”

“Yes.”

“You don’t understand our family.”

“No,” I said. “I understand it perfectly now.”

Eleanor heard us.

She snapped that Lillian had been unstable and irresponsible.

Eric finally turned on her.

“You paid me to meet Clara.”

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

“You accepted.”

“You told me it would be an introduction. You said nobody would get hurt.”

“And then you spent ten years benefiting from it.”

The argument exploded.

Everything they had kept buried came out.

Eleanor had pressured Eric to maintain the marriage.

Richard had threatened to reveal Eric’s role in the original theft if he refused to guarantee Nebula’s debts.

Martin had increased his demands every year.

And Eric had convinced himself each new crime would fix the previous one.

It never did.

Two days later, authorities froze several accounts.

The lender formally canceled the credit line.

Nebula’s board placed Richard on administrative leave.

My house was protected by emergency court order from any unauthorized encumbrance.

Then Rachel called with unexpected news.

“Most of the Raven Trust is untouched.”

I sat down.

“How?”

“The trust assets were never under Eric’s control.”

Only distributions routed into secondary accounts had been stolen.

The underlying holdings remained protected.

Nearly seven million dollars.

Safe.

For the first time in days, I could breathe.

Then Rachel added:

“There’s something else.”

Investigators found a document inside Martin’s archive.

A sealed statement written by my grandmother.

It was addressed to one person.

Evelyn.
