Chapter 8 - My Marriage Had Been Arranged Without Me

For the first time since hiding in the bathroom, I cried.

Not because of the house.

Not because of the money.

Because I remembered the beginning.

Eric waiting outside the charity ballroom.

Eric asking whether I needed a cab.

Eric remembering I liked cinnamon in my coffee.

Eric proposing beside the lake eighteen months later.

I had believed those memories belonged to us.

Now they belonged to a plan.

Rachel let me cry for exactly three minutes.

Then she slid a legal pad toward me.

“We need facts, not assumptions.”

She was right.

A letter proved Eric had been told about me.

It didn’t prove every moment afterward was fake.

But the distinction no longer mattered to my financial survival.

We prepared the next move.

I was scheduled to “return from Paris” Sunday evening.

Until then, everyone believed they had time.

Sarah agreed to help.

Not because I trusted her.

Because she finally understood Richard intended to sacrifice her too.

“He transferred the house into a new LLC,” she told me.

“When?”

“Last month.”

“Did you sign?”

“No.”

Another forged signature.

Their conspiracy was eating itself.

Saturday night, Sarah attended dinner at Eleanor’s home with her phone recording inside her purse.

Richard complained that the lender was delaying the credit line.

Malcolm blamed compliance.

Eric blamed Clara.

Me.

Then Eleanor said something Sarah barely managed to capture clearly.

“We should have done this after Ruth died. Waiting ten years was Martin’s mistake.”

Ruth.

My grandmother.

Sarah asked what she meant.

Everyone stopped talking.

Eleanor tried to change the subject.

But Richard had been drinking.

He laughed.

“Your mother knew Ruth’s money existed before Eric ever met Clara.”

Sarah pressed him.

“How?”

Richard answered.

“Because Martin showed her the trust schedule.”

Then another voice entered the recording.

A man who had arrived late.

He said:

“And Ruth nearly caught us.”

Sarah whispered to me afterward.

“Clara, that was Martin Vale.”

May you like

Martin was back.

And he knew I was supposed to be in Paris.
