Chapter 12 - Everyone Started Saving Themselves

By midnight, the family conspiracy was no longer a family.
It was five frightened people blaming one another.
Malcolm’s attorney had contacted investigators forty-eight hours earlier.
He turned over drafts, emails, and recordings proving Eric and Richard knowingly authorized forged documents.
Sarah surrendered the letter from Martin and the recordings from Eleanor’s house.
Martin provided his financial archive.
Even Eleanor began talking after learning Eric had kept a separate account she knew nothing about.
The loyalty I had feared for ten years lasted less than three hours.
Eric still insisted I had misunderstood.
“You think I never loved you?” he demanded while investigators searched his office.
I looked at him.
“I think you decided love gave you permission to steal from me.”
“That’s not fair.”
“Neither was planning our first date from a financial file.”
He went silent.
For the first time, I saw shame in his face.
But shame was not accountability.
The investigation uncovered more than I expected.
Of the $480,000 taken from my accounts, approximately $310,000 had flowed directly or indirectly into Nebula Systems.
Another $96,000 went to Martin and Malcolm’s fees.
The remainder had been spent by Eric.
Hotels.
Private clubs.
A car lease I had never seen.
And one recurring payment to an apartment in Manhattan.
I assumed another woman.
I was almost relieved.
Infidelity felt ordinary compared with everything else.
Then Rachel called me into the study.
“It isn’t an apartment for a girlfriend.”
“What is it?”
She turned the screen toward me.
The leaseholder was a woman named Lillian Hayes.
I had never heard of her.
“Who is she?”
Rachel hesitated.
“According to the records, she’s seventy-four.”
My stomach tightened.
Then Eric appeared in the doorway.
For the first time all night, he looked genuinely terrified.
“Clara,” he said, “leave her out of this.”
I stared at him.
“Who is Lillian?”
Eric closed his eyes.
May you like
And Eleanor answered from behind him.
“She’s Eric’s real mother.”
