Chapter 7 - MY FATHER HAD BEEN ALIVE FOR FIVE YEARS

Mom could not stand.

She sat on the floor beside the conference table.

“Alive?”

Vincent read again.

HE IS ALIVE.

Address:

Private medical residence outside Toronto.

Name used:

Daniel Carter.

Mom’s surname.

Why medical?

Then supporting letter from Michael.

Daniel survived an attack at marina.

Who attacked?

Nolan Price and two men tied to David.

Daniel escaped car before it was pushed into lake.

Michael Kane had followed him because Daniel suspected leak.

Michael intervened.

Daniel suffered head injury.

Not fatal.

But he refused hospital in Chicago.

Why?

Fear network.

Michael moved him to Canada privately.

Then why not contact Emily?

Because Daniel had memory problems initially.

Months.

Then recovered enough.

Why still no contact for five years?

Letter explained.

David had threatened to expose Daniel’s theft? But he had evidence. Maybe more.

Michael wrote:

Daniel believed Emily and unborn Rory were safest if David believed he died.

He wanted to return after prosecution.

But investigation stalled because Charles-era trust records implicated Kane family.

Then Michael got cancer.

Died before finishing.

Daniel remained in Canada, receiving treatment for neurological complications and living under alias.

Still.

Five years is long.

At some point it became choice.

Mom knew that.

Her relief hardened into anger.

“He had a phone.”

Yes.

“He could write.”

Yes.

“He let me think he abandoned us.”

Yes.

No excuse.

Then Vincent said:

“I’ll arrange a flight.”

Mom looked at him.

“No.”

He stopped.

“I’m not taking Rory to Canada because a dead man left an address.”

Good.

Verification first.

Rebecca contacted Canadian counsel.

Residence confirmed.

Daniel Carter.

Age thirty-five.

Photograph.

Daniel Kane.

Alive.

Then video call offered.

Mom stared at screen before accepting.

I sat beside her.

A man appeared.

Dark hair.

Thinner.

Scar above eyebrow.

Eyes like mine.

He looked at me and immediately started crying.

“Rory.”

I hid behind Mom a little.

He smiled through tears.

“You don’t know me.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“That’s my fault.”

Good answer.

Then Mom:

“Five years.”

Daniel closed eyes.

“I know.”

“Why?”

He told story.

First year medical recovery.

Second year gathering evidence with Michael.

Third year planned return but David discovered someone alive and threatened Emily.

How?

Photos.

Mom at playground pregnant? Rory already born after several months. Threats continued.

David messaged Canadian burner:

Come back and your daughter becomes headline.

Daniel feared Kane association could trigger custody, danger.

So stayed.

Fourth year Michael ill.

Fifth year Daniel became ashamed.

There it was.

Not only protection.

Cowardice after a point.

“I didn’t know how to walk into the life I missed.”

Mom cried.

“That was not your decision to make alone.”

“I know.”

Then I asked:

“Are you my dad?”

He broke.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you come to my birthday?”

Mom closed eyes.

Too direct.

Daniel said:

“Because I was scared.”

“Of David?”

“At first.”

“Then?”

He looked at Mom.

“Of you hating me.”

I thought.

“I don’t know you enough.”

Vincent actually looked away.

Maybe to hide smile or pain.

Then Daniel said:

“That’s fair.”

Good.

No instant reunion.

Then he revealed why David withheld Emily wages now.

Because David had learned Michael’s fifth-birthday release plan.

How?

Nolan had access to Michael estate? Through law firm vendor.

David knew Daniel evidence might emerge before Rory turned five.

He needed Emily financially desperate enough to accept settlement before then.

What settlement?

David planned to offer:

$40,000 severance.

NDA.

Release of all Sterling employment and trust claims, including claims “derivative through Evelyn Carter.”

Mom could have unknowingly signed away grandmother’s ownership rights for $40k.

But first he needed her scared.

Unpaid wages.

Termination threat.

Fake theft evidence.

Then Rory’s appearance at Vincent’s table blew schedule apart.

Again.

Tiny child destroyed legal strategy by walking out of office.

Then Daniel said:

“There’s more.”

Of course.

“David didn’t choose Sterling Bistro location because of foot traffic.”

The property sat on land owned partly by employee trust.

After old fire, trust retained beneficial interest in parcel.

Current bistro redevelopment used that land.

If employee descendants proved rights, David could lose majority economic interest.

Who had strongest claim?

Evelyn Carter’s children because her original profit-sharing certificate showed highest employee allocation.

Emily.

Rachel.

Michael Carter.

Mom’s brother.

Where was Uncle Michael?

We rarely saw him.

He moved to Arizona ten years ago.

Daniel asked:

“When did you last speak?”

Mom thought.

“Eight months.”

Then no answers since Christmas.

Could David target him too?

Rebecca checked.

Michael Carter had signed a release three months earlier.

$250,000 payment.

He sold all claims.

Did he know?

Maybe.

Aunt Rachel had not.

Emily had not.

So David was buying heirs one by one before Daniel reappeared.

Then Daniel said:

“He’ll come for Rachel next.”

We called her.

No answer.

Again.

Then her neighbor picked up.

Rachel had left apartment that morning with two men in suits.

May you like

She said she had “a meeting about Grandma’s old restaurant.”

David had found her first.
