Chapter 6 - THE CAR AT THE BOTTOM OF THE LAKE WAS EMPTY

Daniel’s car had been underwater for nearly five years.

No body inside.

Seat belt cut.

Driver window broken.

Could mean escape.

Could mean body lost.

Could mean staging.

Forensic divers had searched at time but vehicle identity unknown because plates gone and VIN damage.

No remains found.

Then trunk.

Water-damaged briefcase.

Documents mostly destroyed.

One metal USB drive.

Recoverable maybe.

Specialists extracted partial data.

Payroll files.

Sterling trust.

David.

Nolan.

And a video Daniel recorded the night he disappeared.

He sat inside his car.

Dark.

Rain on windshield.

“Emily, if you ever see this…”

Mom started crying.

I sat on her lap.

“…I’m sorry.”

Then:

“I didn’t leave because I didn’t want Rory.”

Mom squeezed me.

“I left because somebody inside my family is giving David information.”

Vincent went still.

Inside Kane family.

Then Daniel:

“I told Vincent about the trust only once.”

Vincent frowned.

“You did?”

He did not remember.

Maybe conversation coded.

Daniel continued:

“Four hours later, David knew.”

Leak.

Someone close to Vincent.

Then:

“I don’t think it’s Vincent.”

Good.

“Rebecca?”

She shook head.

She had not joined Kane counsel then.

Who?

Bodyguards?

Accountants?

Daniel:

“Dad’s old partner.”

Name?

Video glitch.

Then:

“If I’m right, Charles didn’t miss Sterling fraud. He covered part of it.”

Vincent’s father.

That hurt him.

Maybe Charles Kane helped manage restitution trust and allowed misuse.

Why?

Then next:

“The trust wasn’t created by Margaret Sterling.”

What?

We believed guilt restitution.

Daniel said:

“It existed before the fire.”

Original purpose:

Employee ownership fund.

Grandma Evelyn and other workers were supposed gradually earn shares in Sterling House.

Samuel had promised profit-sharing.

Charles Kane helped structure.

Then fire destroyed restaurant.

Instead of distributing insurance proceeds partly through employee fund, Samuel and Charles restructured it into preservation trust.

Workers never became owners.

Their future equity became money controlled by businessmen.

That was the original theft.

My grandmother had not merely been owed wages.

She had been promised ownership.

Purple stars tracked nights without food while she was helping build a restaurant she was supposed to partly own.

History again.

Then Daniel:

“David figured out the trust still holds successor rights in Sterling Bistro property.”

If true, former employee families might have equity claims today.

That could be tens of millions.

David had been stealing distributions and hiding ownership.

Mom’s wages were small piece.

Then:

“He knows Emily is Evelyn’s daughter.”

Of course.

That made her potential claimant.

Employ her.

Keep her poor.

Build theft case.

Then if she asserted trust rights, discredit.

Smart.

Cruel.

Then video ended with Daniel looking behind him.

Headlights.

“I have to go.”

Then:

“Rory, if you’re old enough to watch this someday, I’m sorry I missed everything.”

I did not fully understand.

Mom cried hard.

Then Daniel said:

“Your mom is the bravest person I know.”

I looked at her.

She covered her face.

Then final:

“And if Uncle Vincent is sitting there…”

Vincent leaned forward.

“…tell him the seven men at his table are too many.”

I gasped.

“Seven!”

One bodyguard muttered:

“Six.”

For the first time in days, everyone laughed.

Even Vincent.

Just for a second.

Then video cut.

Daniel drove toward marina.

Security footage from five years ago showed his car entering.

Twenty minutes later, another car exited.

Driver unclear.

Maybe Daniel escaped in second vehicle.

Who owned?

Old registration:

Kane Security Services.

So someone from Vincent’s organization picked him up.

Then car dumped.

Was that rescue?

Kidnapping?

The company vehicle assignment logs were missing.

But handwritten gate record contained initials:

M.K.

Vincent’s face changed.

“Michael Kane.”

His uncle.

Charles’s younger brother.

The “old partner.”

Daniel’s phrase.

Michael had helped run Kane Security.

Died two years ago.

So dead man perhaps leak.

Could have been giving David information.

Then why help Daniel leave marina?

Maybe he arranged disappearance.

Maybe killed.

Need next.

Michael’s estate files.

One recurring payment after Daniel vanished:

$10,000 monthly to:

D.K. CONSULTING.

For three years.

Daniel Kane?

If he was dead, who received?

Account in Canada.

Then payments stopped two years ago when Michael died.

Maybe Daniel was alive in Canada under protection.

Then one final transfer before Michael’s death:

$250,000 to:

RORY C. EDUCATION FUND.

Mom stared.

She never knew.

Account custodian:

Michael Kane.

Beneficiary:

Rory Carter.

Me.

Current balance:

$312,000.

I had college money while Mom couldn’t buy dinner.

Vincent looked furious.

Not at Mom.

At his family.

“Why didn’t anyone tell them?”

No answer.

Because secrecy.

Because control.

Because powerful people keep deciding information is dangerous.

Then Rebecca found a letter attached.

Michael to Vincent.

If Daniel does not return by Rory’s fifth birthday, tell them everything.

My fifth birthday was six months away.

So there was a deadline.

Why fifth birthday?

Another envelope:

DANIEL - RELEASE ON RORY 5TH.

Vincent stared.

“We’re opening it now.”

Inside was an address.

Toronto.

May you like

And one sentence:

HE IS ALIVE.
