Chapter 4 - DAVID HAD BEEN STEALING FROM A TRUST MEANT FOR WORKERS’ CHILDREN

The $5,430.30 was suddenly almost insulting.

David Sterling had not merely withheld eleven weeks of Mom’s pay.

He had been draining a trust created partly to compensate families like ours.

Eight point four million remained.

How much had disappeared?

Rebecca requested emergency accounting through the trust’s custodian.

Original funding:

$3.6 million.

Investment growth over two decades should have pushed value above $14 million.

Current:

$8.4 million.

Estimated withdrawals:

More than $6 million.

David had authorized most.

How?

He was not trustee.

Then signature page.

Successor co-trustee appointment.

Vincent Kane.

Signature.

Not his.

Forged.

Second:

Emily Carter.

Mom nearly laughed.

“Apparently I’m trustee of everything I never knew existed.”

Her signature also forged.

Someone used both identities to create apparent authority.

Who prepared?

Law firm:

Sterling & Price.

David’s cousin, Nolan Price.

Then why was David withholding wages?

Maybe he needed employees desperate.

Some payments from trust were labeled hardship grants to former Sterling House families.

But recipients were shell accounts.

Using real employee names.

Mom’s name appeared.

$84,000 distributed over nine years.

She received zero.

Grandma’s old coworkers too.

Identity theft.

This was systematic.

Then Vincent stood.

Same way he had when he saw purple stars.

Not rage.

Decision.

He called trust counsel.

Not bodyguards.

“Freeze all distributions.”

David’s scheme stopped.

Then he said something Mom did not expect:

“If my father’s estate was supposed to administer this and failed, my family will cover forensic costs.”

Mom replied:

“That doesn’t make you innocent.”

“No.”

Good answer.

Then authorities? Wage and financial investigators. We can keep legal.

David disappeared from the restaurant that afternoon.

His Porsche remained.

Phone off.

Apartment mostly empty.

Had he run?

Maybe.

Then Nolan Price vanished too.

Coincidence? No.

Samuel said David had access to family cabin in Wisconsin.

Police checked.

Empty.

Then restaurant office search, with proper legal process.

The paper I saw in drawer:

Termination Recommendation - Emily Carter.

Reason:

Documented theft from employer.

Mom stared.

“I never stole.”

Evidence attached:

Security footage of Mom entering office after hours.

True?

She had.

Why?

David asked her to collect tip envelopes.

Then screenshot of bank transfer:

$22,000 from Sterling account to Emily Carter.

She never received.

Account number not hers.

Fake account.

They were preparing to accuse her of theft.

Why?

If she became criminal suspect, her testimony about wages less credible.

And perhaps trust forgery could be blamed on her because she appeared co-trustee.

Then another file:

RORY INCIDENT.

I frowned.

My name.

Mom grabbed it first.

Inside:

Photographs of me at preschool.

At playground.

Walking with Mom.

Taken from distance.

Mom went white.

“Why is he watching my daughter?”

Then notes:

Potential leverage if Emily refuses settlement.

Leverage.

I did not know word.

Mom did.

She started shaking.

Vincent’s expression turned cold.

“Who took these?”

Private investigation company.

Owner:

Nolan Price.

They had watched us for seven months.

Then one note:

Father unresolved.

I looked at Mom.

Her face changed.

My father.

She never talked about him much.

She told me his name was Jason Reed.

He left before I was born.

Never met me.

Then Nolan had written:

PATERNITY MAY CREATE ALTERNATE TRUST CLAIM.

What trust?

Why would my father affect Sterling employee restitution?

Mom sat down.

Vincent asked softly:

“Emily?”

She whispered:

“Rory’s father wasn’t Jason Reed.”

I stared.

Grown-ups had been lying again.

“Mom?”

She covered her mouth.

Then looked at me.

Not ready.

But truth had arrived anyway.

“My father’s name is Daniel Kane.”

Silence.

Vincent looked up sharply.

“Kane?”

Mom nodded.

“Your brother.”

The room stopped.

Vincent Kane had one younger brother:

Daniel.

Thirty-five.

Missing for five years.

Public story said he left Chicago after family conflict.

If Daniel was my father—

Vincent Kane was my uncle.

I looked at him.

He looked at me.

Then one of his bodyguards quietly counted under his breath:

“Seven.”

I almost laughed.

Nobody else did.

Vincent asked Mom:

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Did Daniel know?”

Her eyes filled.

“He knew I was pregnant.”

“And?”

“He disappeared three weeks later.”

Vincent’s face changed.

Because apparently that was not the story he had been told.

“What did Daniel tell us?” Rebecca asked.

Vincent answered:

“He said he was leaving Chicago because he’d stolen money from the family.”

Mom shook her head.

“No.”

Then:

“He told me he was leaving because someone threatened Rory.”

I was still inside her then.

Someone had threatened an unborn child.

May you like

Then Mom whispered:

“And the person who threatened us was David Sterling.”
