Chapter 5 - MY FATHER DISAPPEARED BEFORE I WAS BORN

Mom met Daniel Kane six years earlier.
She worked at a hotel restaurant.
He came in often.
Not with bodyguards.
Not like Vincent.
He handled Kane family property operations and hated attention.
They dated quietly.
Why quietly?
Because Mom knew who his family was.
And Daniel wanted a life outside it.
Then pregnancy.
He was terrified but happy.
Mom showed me an old photograph.
Daniel kneeling beside her belly.
Smiling.
So he did not leave because he did not want me.
That mattered.
Then David Sterling entered.
How did he know Daniel?
Business.
Kane Properties held debt on Sterling’s restaurants.
Daniel had been reviewing accounts.
He discovered trust withdrawals.
The employee restitution trust.
Even before Charles Kane died?
Charles died eleven years ago, Daniel later discovered successor issue.
Daniel realized David was using forged authority.
He prepared to tell Vincent.
David threatened Emily.
Not directly at first.
Sent photo of her apartment.
Then ultrasound appointment.
Message:
Walk away from Kane business or your new family gets complicated.
Daniel did not walk away.
Then someone broke into Mom’s apartment.
Nothing stolen.
A baby blanket cut in half.
Message received.
Daniel panicked.
He told Mom:
“I need to disappear before they know where I went.”
He promised to contact later.
Three weeks.
Then silence for five years.
Mom assumed he chose family conflict over us.
Vincent said:
“No.”
His voice sounded different.
“He never contacted me either.”
Then Kane records.
Daniel had withdrawn $600,000 shortly before disappearance.
Family believed theft.
But Rebecca traced.
Money went into escrow accounts for former Sterling workers.
Daniel had been trying to reimburse stolen trust distributions quietly.
He was not stealing Kane money.
He was returning money.
Why hide from Vincent?
Maybe he suspected someone inside Kane organization.
Then Daniel’s last email to Vincent:
I found what Dad missed.
Vincent had assumed it referred to some property deal.
Now likely trust.
Then:
Don’t trust the Sterling accounting.
Then no more.
Five years.
Was he alive?
No evidence.
Then David’s surveillance file:
DANIEL STATUS - UNCONFIRMED.
So David did not know either.
Meaning he feared Daniel could return.
Rory, as Daniel’s daughter, mattered because she could have legal rights to certain Kane trusts.
But why “alternate trust claim” inside Nolan notes?
Kane family succession trust.
Charles Kane had two sons.
Vincent.
Daniel.
If Daniel died, his descendant inherited part.
Me.
I was four and a half.
Potential beneficiary worth maybe millions.
Mom had hidden paternity to protect me.
Another secret.
She whispered:
“I was going to tell you when you were older.”
I understood only partly.
Vincent did.
“Did you ever ask Kane family for money?”
“No.”
“Did Daniel support you before disappearing?”
“Yes.”
“After?”
“No.”
She had worked.
Struggled.
Starved some nights.
While her daughter might have had a trust entitlement.
Why not contact Vincent?
Fear.
David’s threat.
Kane reputation.
And Daniel had warned:
If anything happens, don’t go to my family until you know who I can trust.
That included Vincent.
Harsh.
But maybe necessary.
Then Vincent asked:
“What made you take job at Sterling’s?”
Mom looked embarrassed.
“David offered it.”
Of course.
He found her.
Why employ her?
Monitor.
Keep close.
Control wages.
Financial desperation as leash.
If Mom couldn’t save money, she couldn’t leave.
Eleven weeks unpaid was not random cash-flow delay.
It was intentional pressure.
Then the purple stars were not simply evidence of poverty.
David may have wanted poverty.
That changed Vincent’s face.
Then police found David’s Porsche in Indiana.
No David.
Inside trunk:
Cash.
Passport.
And a child’s red hoodie.
Not mine.
Same brand.
Same size.
Why?
Maybe staged abduction? Too far.
Then receipt showed purchased that morning.
Maybe he intended to create fake evidence involving me.
Why?
Nolan’s notes:
If Emily contacts Kane, initiate custody risk narrative.
Custody?
David had no parental rights.
But could report unsafe environment connected to mafia family, trigger child welfare scrutiny.
A red hoodie could be photographed somewhere compromising.
Manufactured evidence.
Again.
Then David’s laptop cloud backup revealed drafts:
Anonymous tip alleging Emily brought Rory around known organized-crime figure Vincent Kane.
That actually happened—because I walked to him.
They could use it.
But David did not plan that.
Or did he?
He seated Vincent deliberately in rear table.
Assigned Mom nearby.
Babysitter cancellation?
My babysitter canceled morning.
Why?
She texted stomach flu.
Could be real.
Then she called Mom crying.
A man had paid her $300 to cancel.
She did not know why.
Description:
Nolan Price.
My stomach tightened.
They wanted Mom to bring me to restaurant.
Then what?
Did they expect me to stay office?
Maybe they planned to photograph child on premises near Vincent and later claim Mom intentionally exposed me to danger.
But I walked to his table.
Unexpected.
The plan backfired spectacularly.
Then another message between David and Nolan:
D:
MAKE SURE KID IS THERE THURSDAY.
N:
WHY?
D:
IF EMILY TALKS TO KANE, WE NEED A PARENTING PROBLEM READY.
So yes.
They were building leverage.
Then Nolan:
WHAT IF DANIEL COMES BACK?
David:
HE WON’T.
Nolan:
YOU DON’T KNOW THAT.
David:
I DO.
Vincent read that line twice.
“How does David know Daniel won’t come back?”
Maybe because he knew what happened.
Then next recovered message:
D:
THE LAKE TOOK CARE OF DANIEL.
The room went silent.
Lake Michigan?
Did David kill my father?
Need evidence.
Then coordinates attached to old message.
A marina north of Chicago.
Police search records.
Five years earlier, an unidentified vehicle was recovered from lake nearby.
Driver unknown.
Vehicle VIN damaged.
Could it have been Daniel’s?
His car was never found.
Now forensics reopened.
And in an impound warehouse, beneath corrosion, they recovered a partial VIN.
