Chapter 5 - Into the Shadow

The night wore on, and the storm showed no signs of abating as dawn approached.
Julian stood in his father’s old study, tearing apart the bookshelves in a frantic search for the hidden ledger.
He smashed open secret compartments and ripped up floorboards, but found absolutely nothing.
Downstairs in the medical wing, Lily’s breathing was becoming noticeably shallower with every passing hour.
Dr. Harrison had placed an oxygen mask over her small face, his expression growing more pessimistic by the minute.
"The blue markings are spreading upward toward her knees, Julian," the doctor reported quietly.
"Once it reaches her upper thighs, the toxin will hit her major arterial highway, and it will be over."
Julian felt a heavy weight pressing down on his chest, a feeling of complete powerlessness he had never experienced before.
He walked down to the cold, dimly lit wine cellar where Clara was being held captive under armed guard.
She was curled up on the stone floor, her emerald green dress ruined, stained with dirt and her own tears.
She looked up as the heavy iron door groaned open, her eyes pleading for a shred of mercy.
"Julian, please. I can help you find them. I know where they keep my brother," she whispered hoarsely.
Julian sat on a wooden crate opposite her, his face illuminated by a single, harsh overhead bulb.
"Tell me everything you know about the Azure Order’s operations in this city, Clara. Do not omit a single detail."
Clara wiped her face, swallowed hard, and began to speak in a trembling, hurried voice.
"They operate out of an old chemical distribution facility near the abandoned southern pier."
"The man running the local sector calls himself Marcus, a ruthless operator who answers directly to the high council."
"He is the one who has my brother, and he is the one who engineered the blue toxin to blackmail you."
Julian memorized the location, his tactical mind immediately formulating a dangerous, high-stakes rescue plan.
"Did he give you any indication of how the antidote is stored or administered?" Julian questioned aggressively.
"He said it’s a clear serum, kept in a temperature-controlled silver case because it’s highly unstable," she replied.
Julian stood up, his mind made up. He was going to storm the chemical facility alone, without involving the police.
If the authorities got involved, Marcus would destroy the antidote instantly, sealing Lily's fate forever.
"Keep her locked down," Julian instructed the guards as he exited the cellar, leaving Clara to her grief.
He went to his private armory, selecting a tactical vest, a silenced pistol, and several combat knives.
