Chapter 2 - The Medical Mystery

Dr. Alan Harrison arrived within fifteen minutes, his medical bag soaked from the ongoing downpour.
He rushed into the study, immediately setting to work on the unconscious little girl.
Julian stood by the window, his hands clenched into tight fists as he watched the doctor examine the blue stains.
Clara sat on the edge of a nearby chair, nervously wringing her hands, her eyes darting between Julian and the door.
Evelyn paced the room, her elegant lavender robe trailing behind her like a ghostly shadow.
"I have never seen anything like this in all my years of medicine," Dr. Harrison murmured, using a swab to test the blue substance.
The moment the cotton touched the blue mark, it hissed slightly, releasing a faint, sweet scent of almonds.
"It is a highly sophisticated, synthetic neurotoxin," the doctor concluded, his face turning incredibly grave.
"It absorbs through the skin, putting the patient into a deep, comatose sleep while slowly depressing the respiratory system."
Julian stepped forward, his presence commanding and terrifying in his silent fury.
"Can you flush it out of her system? Is there an antidote?" Julian demanded, his voice dangerously low.
Dr. Harrison shook his head slowly, a gesture that sent a spike of pure panic through Julian's heart.
"Not a standard one, Julian. This is a custom molecular compound, engineered in a high-tech lab."
"Whoever engineered this toxin holds the only antidote, and Lily has less than forty-eight hours before her organs begin to fail."
Clara let out a sob, burying her face in her hands as the weight of the diagnosis settled over the room.
Evelyn stopped her pacing, her sharp eyes fixing intently on Clara's trembling form.
"How did anyone get close enough to Lily to apply this substance during a secure family gala?" Evelyn questioned sharply.
The security system of the Vance estate was state-of-the-art, requiring biometric access at every entry point.
Julian turned his gaze to Clara, a sudden, dark suspicion taking root in the corners of his mind.
Clara looked up, sensing the heavy silence, her eyes widening as she realized both Julian and Evelyn were staring at her.
"Why are you looking at me like that? Do you think I had something to do with this?" she gasped, her voice defensive.
"You were the one in charge of the guest list tonight, Clara," Evelyn pointed out, her tone dripping with icy accusation.
"And you were also the last person seen with Lily before she wandered off into the gardens."
Clara stood up, her emerald dress catching the light as she faced her mother-in-law with sudden heat.
"I love Lily as if she were my own daughter! How dare you accuse me of hurting her!" she yelled back.
Julian raised his hand, silencing the brewing argument with a single, authoritative gesture that brooked no resistance.
"Enough, both of you. We are going to find out exactly who entered this estate tonight, guest or staff."
May you like
He pulled out his phone and dialed his chief of security, his voice cold as steel.
"Lock down the entire estate. Nobody leaves, and nobody enters until I personally review every single second of security footage."
