Chapter 9 - The Wiretapped Truth

Inside the high-security interrogation suites of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in downtown Manhattan, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Special Agent Harris leaned across the steel table, placing a digital recording device between Damian Thorne and his public defender.
Damian sat in an orange prison jumpsuit, his face pale, his eyes hollow, and his hands trembling uncontrollably.
“Mr. Thorne,” Agent Harris said calmly, tapping the recorder.
“Your co-conspirator, Bianca Caldwell, has spent the last three hours providing a full videotaped confession in Exchange Room B.”
Damian’s head snapped up, his bloodshot eyes widening in shock.
“She… she confessed?” Damian croaked.
Agent Harris pressed the play button.
Bianca’s trembling, tear-streaked voice echoed through the interrogation room speakers with sickening clarity:
“It was Damian’s idea from the very beginning! He found out that Clara’s trust had a five-hundred-million-dollar life insurance payout that would default to him upon her natural death.”
“He was the one who bought the synthetic cardiotoxin from the dark-web contact in Prague!”
“He told me that if we timed the wedding for the exact night she went into cardiac arrest, her death would look like an emotional breakdown caused by grief, and no one would ever order a forensic toxicology autopsy!”
“He promised me half the trust money and the CEO seat once Clara was buried!”
Damian felt the blood drain completely from his face, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped animal.
“She’s lying!” Damian screamed, lunging across the table until the marshals shoved him back into his chair.
“She was the one who prepared the tea! She was the one who wanted Clara dead so she could take her place!”
Agent Harris picked up a manila folder and dropped it onto the table.
Inside were the encrypted transaction logs from Damian’s private cryptocurrency wallet, matching the exact payment transferred to the dark-web chemical distributor in Prague six months ago.
The digital fingerprint, the IP address, and the biometric authorization were all tied directly to Damian’s personal device.
“You signed your own life sentence, Mr. Thorne,” Agent Harris said with ice-cold finality.

“In the State of New York, conspiracy to commit murder with the use of a regulated chemical weapon carries a mandatory term of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.”
Damian stared at the digital records, his chest heaving, realizing that every single trap he had set for me had snapped shut around his own neck.
