Chapter 11 - The Begging in Chains

One week before the formal trial, Damian Thorne requested an emergency evidentiary meeting in the secure visiting pavilion of the federal detention facility.

I arrived flanked by Marcus and two private security operatives, dressed in a sharp navy power suit that accentuated my restored strength.

Damian sat behind the reinforced glass partition, wearing an oversized beige jumpsuit, his wrists shackled to a steel eyelet on the table.

His hair was unwashed, his face hollowed out from weeks of sleepless terror, and dark purple bruises circled his sunken eyes.

When he saw me walk into the room, whole, radiant, and commanding, he pressed both of his shackled hands against the glass.

“Clara…” Damian sobbed, his voice muffled through the partition speaker.

“Look at you… you look so beautiful…”

I sat down calmly in the chair opposite him, resting my hands in my lap without picking up the receiver.

Damian grabbed the intercom phone with shaking fingers, pleading desperately through the glass.

“Clara, please pick up! Just give me two minutes! I am begging you on my knees!”

I slowly lifted the receiver and placed it to my ear, my expression completely vacant of emotion.

“Speak, Damian,” I said, my voice ice-cold.

“You have one minute.”

“Clara, you have to tell the prosecutors that this was all a misunderstanding!” Damian wept, tears splashing onto the steel partition.

“Bianca poisoned my mind! She threatened me! She told me you were going to leave me and ruin the company!”

“I never wanted you to die, Clara! I love you! I’ve always loved you!”

“If you drop the charges, I will sign over every single asset! I will leave New York forever! I will never speak your name again!”

“Just don't let me spend forty years in a concrete cage!”

I listened to his desperate, groveling excuses, remembering the moment I lay drowning in my own blood on that operating table while he toasted his mistress with champagne.

“Do you remember what you told the media at the Plaza Hotel, Damian?” I asked softly into the receiver.

Damian froze, his breath catching in his throat.

“You told the entire world that I was merely a fragile stepping stone from your early career,” I continued, every word ringing with the absolute weight of justice.

“You believed you could step on my chest, watch my heart tear in two, and walk into a golden sunset with a criminal.”

“You did not step on a stone, Damian.”

“You stepped on a sleeping dragon.”

“And this cage is the only home you will ever know for the rest of your natural life.”

I hung up the receiver, stood up, and turned my back on him.

Behind me, Damian slammed his fists against the glass, screaming my name in hysterical agony as the guards dragged him away into the dark corridor.
