Chapter 9 - The Monster Who Tried to Tell the Truth

Everything Rafe believed about his father began unraveling with one phone call.

The federal investigator had contacted his attorney.

Anthony Calder had secretly cooperated with authorities eight years earlier.

Project Harborlight was a shipping scheme that concealed illegal weapons transfers and money laundering inside legitimate maritime cargo.

Daniel Bennett had discovered the financial records.

Anthony had agreed to testify.

But before either man could deliver the evidence, someone inside their organization learned about the investigation.

Daniel disappeared.

The warehouse burned.

And Anthony suffered his stroke six months later.

Rafe listened without speaking.

His father had built a violent empire.

Nothing could erase that.

But perhaps, near the end, Anthony had tried to dismantle the worst part of it.

Rafe traveled to the estate outside the city.

His father sat beside a window overlooking bare winter trees.

The stroke had left him unable to form more than a few words.

Rafe hadn't visited in nearly a year.

Anthony's eyes widened when he entered.

"Daniel Bennett," Rafe said.

His father's expression changed.

"Alive?"

Anthony struggled to lift his hand.

He pointed toward a drawer.

Inside was an old leather journal.

Most pages contained fragmented handwriting.

Dates.

Numbers.

Names.

On one page, Rafe found a sentence written with surprising clarity.

Grant knows where Daniel is. Victor knows who ordered the fire.

Rafe turned the page.

The children must never pay for our sins.

Then came a name.

Not Grant.

Not Victor.

Not Tessa.

Leon Mercer.

Rafe knew Leon.

He was Calder Maritime's chief financial officer.

He had managed the company's accounts for twelve years and had been one of the few men Rafe trusted without hesitation.

Leon also had access to Rafe's digital authorization credentials.

Malik called as Rafe studied the journal.

"Boss, we've traced the forged transfers."

Rafe already knew what he would hear.

"Leon Mercer."

"Yes. And there's more."

"What?"

"Leon's been moving millions through Kesler's companies. He's preparing to disappear."

"When?"

"Tonight."

Rafe closed the journal.

"Then we don't have much time."

But before he could leave, Anthony grabbed his wrist with unexpected strength.

He forced out three broken words.

"Not... the... money."

Rafe crouched.

"What are you trying to tell me?"

His father's eyes filled with tears.

"Baby."

Rafe went cold.

Anthony pointed toward the journal.

On the final page, written months earlier, was a sentence that changed everything.

Mercer believes Sloane's child is the final key to Harborlight.
