Chapter 14 - The Miracle Behind the Hospital Doors

Rafe arrived at the hospital while the medical team was evaluating Sloane for preterm labor.

For the first time in years, he didn't use his name to demand access.

He spoke to the nurse at the desk.

"I'm her husband. Please let her know I'm here if she wants me."

The nurse nodded.

Twenty minutes later, Sloane's doctor stepped into the hallway.

"She's stable. The baby's heartbeat is reassuring. We're treating her contractions and monitoring both of them closely."

Rafe released a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

"Can I see her?"

"The decision is hers."

He nodded.

"Of course."

When the nurse returned, she led him into the room.

Sloane lay against white pillows, an IV line attached to her arm.

She looked exhausted.

Beautiful.

Terrified.

Rafe stopped inside the doorway.

"Hi," he said softly.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Hi."

He approached slowly.

"Can I sit?"

She nodded.

He pulled a chair beside the bed.

Neither spoke for a moment.

Then Rafe noticed the baby-name notebook resting on the bedside table.

"You brought it?"

Sloane looked away.

"I couldn't leave it."

His throat tightened.

"I'm glad."

She rested a hand over her stomach.

"The doctor thinks they may be able to stop the contractions. But if she comes now..."

Her voice faded.

Rafe reached toward her hand and paused.

Sloane took his fingers.

That small gesture nearly broke him.

"Whatever happens," he whispered, "you won't face it alone."

She studied him.

"You said that before."

"I know."

"What changed?"

Rafe swallowed.

"I finally understand that being present isn't something I can replace with money, security, or promises."

Tears slid down her cheeks.

"And Tessa?"

"She has professional protection. She has a life to rebuild. I'm not abandoning her, but I won't keep abandoning you."

Sloane closed her eyes.

"I wanted our daughter to have a father who came home."

"I want to become that man."

"Not just tonight?"

"Not just tonight."

She squeezed his hand.

Then the monitor beside her shifted.

Another contraction appeared.

The nurse returned.

The doctor followed.

For a frightening moment, Rafe feared their daughter was coming immediately.

But the medical team adjusted Sloane's treatment, continued monitoring, and eventually her contractions eased.

By morning, the doctor had encouraging news.

The labor had stopped for now.

Their daughter remained safely inside her mother.

Rafe bowed his head in relief.

Then Sloane looked at him.

"Rafe?"

"Yes?"

"I think I finally know her name."

He smiled weakly.

"Tell me."

She opened the notebook to a blank page.

And wrote two words.

Hope Bennett.

Rafe's smile faded into tears.

But before he could answer, Sloane added something unexpected.

"I want her to carry my father's name."

May you like

Then she looked directly into his eyes.

"And whether she carries yours someday depends on what happens after we leave this hospital."
