Chapter 1 - The Woman Who Vanished Before Dawn

Rafe Calder had faced armed enemies without blinking, but the wedding ring on his pillow made his hands shake.

At 4:47 a.m., he called his wife for the seventh time.

Straight to voicemail.

He opened the baby-name notebook. On the first page, Sloane had written three names in her careful handwriting.

Isabella. Grace. Evelyn.

Beneath them was a sentence that nearly stopped his heart.

I wonder if she'll recognize her father's voice when she's born.

Rafe sat on the edge of the untouched bed.

For months, he had believed protecting his wife meant keeping dangerous people away from her. He had surrounded their apartment with security, arranged medical appointments, and made sure everything she wanted could be delivered within an hour.

But he couldn't remember the last appointment he had actually attended.

His phone rang.

Malik.

"We've checked the building cameras," his security chief reported. "Mrs. Calder left at 1:16 a.m."

"Alone?"

"Yes. She dismissed the driver and walked three blocks before getting into a yellow cab."

"Find the cab."

A long silence followed.

"Boss, there's something else. She visited a law office yesterday afternoon."

Rafe went still.

"What kind of law office?"

"Family law."

The room seemed to tilt.

Malik continued carefully.

"And she withdrew money from an account that isn't connected to yours."

Rafe stood so quickly the notebook fell.

"Where did the money come from?"

"We're still checking."

"Find out."

He ended the call and opened his wife's final message again.

Do not turn my leaving into another decision you make for me.

For the first time, he understood that ordering his men to find her might be exactly what she feared.

Then another message appeared.

Unknown number.

Your wife didn't disappear because of Tessa.

She disappeared because she discovered what happened to her father.

Rafe stared at the screen.

Sloane's father had supposedly died in a boating accident eight years earlier.

But beneath the message was a photograph.

Her father was alive.

And standing beside him was Grant Kesler.
