Chapter 10 - The Daughter Worth More Than Millions

Rafe read the sentence until the words seemed to lose meaning.

His unborn daughter.

A child who hadn't taken her first breath.

Somehow, she had become part of an eight-year-old conspiracy.

He called Malik immediately.

"Find out what Mercer wants from the baby."

Within two hours, the answer began emerging.

Project Harborlight's missing evidence had been stored in an encrypted financial archive.

Daniel Bennett had designed the archive himself.

When he disappeared, its access credentials vanished.

Years later, Mercer discovered that Daniel had transferred ownership of a private trust to Sloane.

The trust included a provision for her future children.

But the trust did not give anyone control over the archive simply because a child existed.

Instead, it contained a signed declaration naming Sloane and her descendants as the intended beneficiaries of recovered assets.

Mercer had mistaken that declaration for a way to gain leverage over the evidence.

He believed threatening Sloane's baby would force her to cooperate.

Rafe felt an unfamiliar kind of fear.

Not the fear of dying.

The fear of failing someone who depended entirely on him.

Meanwhile, Sloane arrived at the bank with Rachel and two federal investigators.

The brass key opened a private vault.

Inside stood a gray metal box.

Sloane's hands trembled as she lifted the lid.

There were bank documents, photographs, a sealed drive, and a letter addressed to her.

She unfolded it.

My beautiful Sloane,

If you're reading this, something has gone terribly wrong.

I wanted to leave you a world in which no man could decide your worth, your safety, or your future.

If I failed, forgive me.

But remember this: love is not the same thing as control.

Sloane began to cry.

For eight years, she had mourned a father she believed dead.

Now his words seemed to speak directly to the marriage she had fled.

At the bottom of the box lay a second envelope.

For Rafe Calder, when he is ready to know the truth.

Sloane hesitated.

Then handed it to the investigator.

Inside was a photograph of a much younger Rafe standing beside Daniel.

Sloane stared.

She had never seen the picture.

Rafe looked barely eighteen.

Her father had his arm around his shoulders.

On the back, Daniel had written:

The boy who saved my daughter's life. I will never forget what he did.

Sloane couldn't breathe.

She had no memory of Rafe saving her.

But the photograph proved their story had begun years before they met.
