Chapter 5 - THE FILE THEY TOOK AFTER MY FATHER'S FUNERAL

My husband left my father’s funeral early.

He told me he had a migraine.

I remembered kissing his cheek near the cemetery gates.

Telling him to go home.

Thanking him for coming.

Then I spent another hour beside Dad’s grave while Adrian drove downtown and helped Claudia remove a file from my father’s office.

The betrayal suddenly had layers.

Celeste.

The hotel room.

The forged signature.

And now this.

“What was in the file?” I asked.

Julian looked troubled.

“Harrison kept multiple private transaction folders.”

“Which one was missing?”

He checked the inventory.

Then went still.

“Project Harborlight.”

Margaret’s expression changed.

I looked between them.

“What is Harborlight?”

Dad had used the code name for a proposed restructuring of Vale Harbor’s private credit division.

That division controlled hundreds of millions in financing for hotel acquisitions and development partners.

Including the facility Adrian wanted.

Dad suspected internal abuse.

He had begun an audit.

And apparently, Claudia and Adrian wanted the file.

Then Margaret found a backup.

Dad had scanned part of it into his private legal vault.

We opened the first document.

A list of questionable credit applications.

MorganWell appeared four times.

Not recent.

The earliest request was eighteen months before my wedding.

My mouth went dry.

“Adrian was trying to access Vale Harbor before we got married.”

Margaret nodded.

A second file showed something worse.

Adrian’s company had already received $12 million through an indirect lending vehicle connected to Vale Harbor.

Approved by Claudia Vance.

Dad discovered it six months later.

Then he wrote in the margin:

Unauthorized. Investigate Morgan connection to Elise.

I stared at his handwriting.

Dad had wondered whether Adrian married me because of Vale Harbor.

The thought hurt so badly I had to sit down.

Margaret put one hand on my shoulder.

“Elise, suspicion is not proof.”

“I know.”

But the timeline was brutal.

Adrian met me two years ago.

Proposed eleven months later.

Married me five months after that.

Meanwhile, MorganWell was already quietly borrowing Vale Harbor money.

Then another scanned page appeared.

A background report.

Dad had investigated Adrian.

At the bottom, one note:

Prior relationship with Celeste Bain began before Elise.

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Margaret read carefully.

Adrian and Celeste dated briefly four years earlier.

He never told me.

When he hired her as communications director, he introduced her as a former colleague.

Not an ex.

Then I saw Dad’s final handwritten sentence.

If Adrian marries Elise, protect her assets immediately.

My father had been trying to protect me from my own husband.

Then Margaret opened the last available file.

A draft letter addressed to me.

It began:

Elise, there is something about Adrian you need to know before I let this marriage continue another month.

May you like

The letter ended there.

Dad never finished it.
