Chapter 12 - THE HOUR MY HUSBAND NEVER TOLD ME ABOUT

Adrian denied it.
Then the gate logs proved him wrong.
His car entered my father’s property at 5:08 P.M.
Dad collapsed around 6:40.
Adrian left at 5:51.
I stared at the record.
“You went there.”
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
My chest tightened.
“You lied again.”
“I was afraid.”
“That word is becoming useless.”
He looked destroyed.
Then he told me.
Dad had called him.
Asked him to come alone.
He confronted Adrian about MorganWell’s hidden debt.
About Claudia.
About Celeste.
Everything.
My stomach dropped.
“Dad knew about the affair?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
“What did he say?”
Adrian’s voice broke.
“He told me I had one week to tell you everything.”
I stopped breathing.
“And you didn't.”
“No.”
“What happened during the meeting?”
“We argued.”
Dad accused him of using me.
Adrian denied it.
Then Dad said if Adrian failed to tell me the truth, he would.
Adrian left angry.
That was his last conversation with my father.
“Did you touch his medication?”
“No.”
“Did you give him anything?”
“No.”
“Did he look ill?”
Adrian hesitated.
“He looked tired.”
I closed my eyes.
For months after Dad died, Adrian let me grieve beside him while hiding the fact that Dad’s final hours included an argument about his affair.
I felt something inside me go quiet.
Not rage.
Something colder.
A marriage ending.
Then Margaret handed me another recovered file.
Dad’s voice memo.
Recorded at 5:56 P.M.
Minutes after Adrian left.
His voice sounded strained but clear.
Adrian came.
I held my breath.
He denied marrying Elise for money. I believe him.
Adrian covered his face.
Dad continued.
I do not believe he is strong enough to resist Claudia while MorganWell is failing.
Then:
If Elise asks, tell her this: loving a weak man does not make him evil. But weakness can still destroy you if he keeps choosing it.
Tears streamed down my face.
Dad understood Adrian better than I had.
Then the recording continued.
Claudia was here earlier. I feel strange. I am calling the doctor.
My stomach tightened.
That supported Adrian’s account.
He had left.
Dad was alive.
But not well.
Then came another sound.
A doorbell.
Dad whispered:
Someone’s here.
The recording ended.
Security logs showed one more entry.
At 6:03 P.M.
Visitor:
Celeste Bain.
I looked up.
May you like
Adrian went completely still.
His mistress had been the last known person to enter my father’s house before he collapsed.
